One-Stick Wonder

There's nothing this space-saving multitasker can't handle

-Paige Herman-Axel

If your handbag is anything like mine, it's probably overrun with products that you just can't leave home without-like hand cream, lip balm, a hair smoother, a spot treatment for sudden onset pimples, need I go on? These "essentials" continue to pile up and weigh me down until I sit down to do a major purge that has me asking myself, do I really need to carry a body lotion, too?

Well, those days are over with the arrival of Bliss Spa's Problem Salved 20-in-1 Wonder Balm. Its unique blend of ingredients includes an anti-irritation complex of ginger extract and bisabolol, moisturizing mango butter, soothing kukui nut oil and antibacterial tea tree oil to tackle just about anything that may come your skin's way.

Seriously, get ready to downsize to a smaller bag-dare I suggest a clutch?-because this four-inch stick carries a powerful punch. Among its myriad uses: Sunburn soother, post-wax relief, insect bite (and other) itch eliminator, dry skin hydrator, chafing preventor, shoe blister stopper, cuticle softener (and manicure life extender), eyebrow groomer, and make-up mistake fixer. And I'm willing to bet you'll find even more uses as it becomes a staple in your on-the-go beauty arsenal.

Lovin' It

The Purse I'm Loving

Fashionable and functional

-Julie Ryan Evans

I love the little feeling of turning over a new leaf whenever I get a new purse. Besides spicing up outfits, it's a great chance to purge the hidden receipts and wrappers buried at the bottom of my old bag, to dispose of that lipstick that was a big mistake, to organize and streamline. It's one of those little things that makes me happy and feel like I'm a little more in control.

The new bag I'm currently loving is my first from MZ Wallace, which touts itself as the "Premier American nylon handbag company". Their fall collection is gorgeous with rich browns, greys, plums, reds and black. I have the Chestnut Bedford Nylon Jane.

Besides the compliments I get every single time I take it anywhere, my favorite part of this chic bag is all of the pockets. There's one for my lipstick, one for my cell phone, another for my son's snacks and more for a random race car and anything else I need. But it keeps them all separate and organized, which is a nice change from the big pile at the bottom of the big tote bags I've been schlepping all summer. And the nylon stays clean and wipes off nicely - chocolate ice cream yesterday disappeared in an instant.

I'm not the only one loving these bags - Kristin Cavallari has been spotted with her MZ Wallace bag around Los Angeles lately. I expect to see many more around as well.

Bags range from about $200-$400 and can be purchased at mzwallace.com, Nordstorm, and other stores across the country.

The Power of Vitamin C

This vitamin can do just as much for your skin as it does for your body

-Paige Herman-Axel

We all learn by an early age that vitamin C is important for our bodies' health, and who hasn't taken a mega-dose to boost immunity? And without (most of us) even knowing it, the vitamin C we consume through citrus fruits prevents you from getting scurvy, a disorder that can cause spots on the skin and uncontrolled bleeding. Although scurvy hasn't been much of a problem for the past few centuries, the disease is caused by a lack of vitamin C that leads to collagen production problems within the body. If you're wondering why you should care, the same decline of collagen leads to wrinkles, which is why vitamin C can play a role in anti-aging, both inside and out.

While preventing wrinkles may not be as easy as eating on orange a day, skincare products with vitamin C have been proven to work. You'll usually see it on a product label as L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. These ingredients penetrate the skin and boost natural production of collagen that can lead to improved skin elasticity and less noticeable fine lines. Vitamin C also helps lighten dark spots, so continued use yields more even skin tone. Lastly, vitamin C is a super antioxidant, so as it's working to repair your skin, it's protecting your skin from the damage caused by UV rays and free radicals.

But, of course, there's a catch. Exposure to air causes oxidation, which may render the vitamin C ineffective. (Look for a product with stabilized vitamin C.) You also want a high concentration so the product contains enough vitamin C to actually do something, but you're going to pay more for a quality product. As a rule of thumb, the higher up on the ingredient list the vitamin C appears, the stronger the concentration, so be sure to compare and contrast. If you have really sensitive skin, vitamin C may be too harsh for you to use. While a little stinging is normal, intense burning or a red rash is not.

Because it's such a great anti-ager, there are a lot of vitamin C products on the market. Here's my list of the top 5:

1. Skinceuticals Phloretin CF: This super serum combines the power of vitamin C with antioxidant powerhouses ferulic acid and phloretin, which has been shown to protect the skin from a wide range of damage-causing molecules. $150, skinceuticals.com
2. Cellex-C High Potency Serum: Cellex-C has been a driving force behind the vitamin C revolution, and this serum is a great place to start. $100, sephora.com
3. MD Skincare Hydra-Pure Vitamin C Serum: The brainchild of New York City dermatologist Dennis Gross, MD, we love how this serum is packaged in an airtight pump to prevent oxidation. $90, nordstrom.com
4. Philosophy The Microdelivery Peel: Vitamin C comes together with skin-firming peptides and exfoliating lactic and salicylic acids for an anti-aging treatment that packs a powerful punch. $65, beauty.com
5. IS Clinical C-15 Serum Advance: In addition to the C-15 version, this professional-strength line of serums contains vitamin C-based offerings designed to target different needs. Visit isclinical.com to find a skincare professional near you.

Once-a-Day Skincare

Beautiful skin doesn't get much easier

-Paige Herman-Axel

Before I got married, my skincare regimen maxed out at about 8 products-both morning AND night. I was using a professional-grade line called Modus (available at spalook.com), and I didn't mind spending so much time in the bathroom since I (still, to this day) don't think my skin ever looked better. But, alas, the wedding came and went, and my priorities shifted away from my complexion to other things. And once I got pregnant I decided that along with the caffeine and alcohol, I was going to try to clean up my skincare act as well.

With my days of harsh acids and chemicals behind me, I've tried a slew of new baby-safe natural and organic products. While I've been happy with some, many have left me jonesing for the ingredients I can't pronounce. Then I came across Bieux Skin, and I realized I will be able to make it through the last month and a half of my pregnancy-and with great skin to boot.

Sure the hormones have given me super-thick hair (as well as some dark patches) and the extra weight I'm carrying around has even plumped up my fine lines, but the ingredients in Bieux Skin's 24 Hour Treatment Moisturizer are working to reverse the signs of aging I already have while preventing new ones from forming.

First, a complex of peptides and proteins boost and protect collagen in the skin, as hematite (a really pretty mineral) supposedly targets the skin's density and firmness. Then, alpha arbutin (a natural skin brightener) evens out skin tone by minimizing existing spots and preventing the UV damage that causes new ones to form. As if that weren't enough, the moisturizer also contains a "happy skin" ingredient called roseroot extract that is said to "wellness and sensations of pleasure in the skin."

We all look better when we feel good about ourselves, right? But hands down, the best part is the patent-pending 24-hour moisturizing technology, which will come in handy once the baby arrives and I have little to no time for myself. $97, sephora.com

O, Yeah!

Is oxygen the key to gorgeous skin?

-Paige Herman-Axel

Oxygen is literally all around us, and in addition to being essential for life, there's a lot of buzz that it may be an integral part of beauty as well. Plastic surgeons often prescribe sessions in an oxygen-rich hyperbaric chamber to promote healing, more and more spas are offering oxygen facials, and there are a variety of oxygen-based products on the market promising less acne and younger looking skin.

Many proponents of oxygen therapy say that we need to supplement our skin with oxygen now more than ever, because pollution and other environmental toxins are robbing our skin of the essential gas. But just how does oxygen work? First, oxygen plays an antibacterial role (perfect for improving acne) since bacteria can't thrive in the presence of oxygen. It can also help the skin heal after treatments and procedures such as laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. And just think about what happens when we don't get enough oxygen in our lungs. Similar to suffocation, the skin can become sallow, dull and noticeably aged without enough oxygen.

Moisturizer
You're using face cream every day (right?), so why not give your skin a shot of oxygen while you're at it? One to try: Simply Flawless O2 Anti-Aging Moisturizing Crème, $49.95, simplyflawlesso2.com

Eye mask
The eye area is especially prone to fatigue as well as signs of aging. A targeted treatment that delivers oxygen can help brighten and soothe puffiness. One to try: Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Mask, $54 for 4, Blissworld.com

Skin treatment
Use a super-oxygenated product beneath your daily moisturizer morning and night to counteract the effects of the sun, pollution or smoking. One to try: Laboratoire Remède Super Oxygenating Booster, $98, beauty.com

Body cream
Don't forget your skin from the neck down-it's prone to the same effects that lack of oxygen can have on your face. One to try: Natura Bissé O2 Oxygen Body Cream, $80, bergdorfgoodman.com

Lacey Ryan's sweet stackable bracelets and necklaces

-April Daniels Hussar

Move over Sienna Miller, there's a new hippy-chic-chick in town. Gorgeous young design student/entrepreneur (do you hate her already?) Lacey Ryan recently launched an oh-so-sweet line of stackable bracelets and necklaces, beautifully melding funky and earthy with stylish and posh.

Lacey has been making jewelry since the ripe old age of nine, and her inspiration is bringing luck, strength and spiritual guidance to those who wear her jewelry. That means she chooses materials and charms intended to draw good spirit to the wearer. That's you!

Lacey uses a plethora of gorgeous beads, divine charms, and eclectic materials from braided leather to thin silk cords to gold and silver chains; even the most die-hard fashionista will enjoy mixing and matching to her heart's desire. Stunning beads include jet-black onyx, vivid blue jade, bone-white fossil (yes fossil!), and rich, earthy coral, to name a few. Gold and silver charms are even more varied - a few possible combinations include the Kabbalah charm paired with Amethyst beads (mysticism, energy and protection); the Tree of Life and Fleur de Lis paired with Carnelian (eternity, purity and vitality); or a blue jade (inner peace) bracelet with a simple yin-yang charm. Mineral Makeup is Rock Solid

Mineral makeup may be just what your skin needs

-Paige Herman-Axel

Comprised purely of minerals and pigments found in nature, mineral makeup has gone from a beauty industry secret to the mainstream in just a few short years. Dermatologists and aestheticians alike extol its virtues because it's free of ingredients that can harm or irritate the skin-namely preservatives, dyes and talc. But why does mineral makeup have a leg up on traditional cosmetics? Here's a short list of reasons why.

1. Perfect for all skin types. Mineral makeup will not cause sensitive skin to react, and will not clog pores or make acne worse.

2. It makes the skin look better. Minerals reflect light in a way that minimizes imperfections. read more...

Transform your skin

Get the benefits of Canyon Ranch without leaving home

-Paige Herman-Axel

When I think I spa products, the first things that come to mind are salt scrubs and body lotions with active ingredients like essential oils and botanicals. Don't get me wrong - I love these kinds of products and there's a place for them in every beauty regimen, but they usually aren't my first recommendation when it comes to serious skin care for those who are looking for real results.

That all changed when I came across Canyon Ranch Your Transformation, a line of nine skin and body products that blends the natural botanicals we've come to expect from a spa line and science that's powerful enough to make a difference in the quality of our skin. And in keeping with Canyon Ranch's commitment to health and wellness, all of the products are free of parabens, artificial dyes, alcohol and mineral oil.

On the natural side you get potent antioxidant protection against aging free radicals thanks to goji berry, bearberry and blueberry. The science side gets a little more technical, but your skin will look all the better because of it. read more...

Celebrity Style - Purple Rocks

Purple - it's not just for Barney

-Julie Evans

Purple is popping up everywhere as a hot color for fall, and celebs are increasingly sporting the luscious color. Infamous mommy-blogger Dooce even sported purple tights at the recent Blogher conference.

As I look at the fall fashions, I'm drawn. But I'm also pregnant, and really don't want to look like a big grape. So instead of sporting purple head to toe, I think a splash of purple is just right for me. And I found just the right splash (Conscious Jewelry Amethyst Necklace, $450).

Isn't it gorgeous? And while quite pricey, it is made of Amethyst, the stone of spirituality and contentment. And since "Amethyst balances intellectual and emotional energies and provides stability, strength and invigoration," I'm thinking it's worth it. Because really, how can you put a price on that?

For those final poolside parties and dwindling days at the beach, this is one cover-up you won't want to take off. ($58)

Some other purple I'm pining over:

These amazing shoes ($248)

Or this great dress that would transition so nicely from summer into fall ($168) with the addition of a little cardigan ($188).

Here's another amazing dress that is making me drool ($450).

How about this great cashmere t-shirt ($145) that will go with anything?

Or for another pop of color that you can use ever day (and probably should for the price) this MJ bag ($1,295) is yum-my.

And for a punch of purple that will keep your bank account out of the red, this blouse ($24) is a great way to update your wardrobe.

Send under-eye circles packing

There's no need to carry around this extra baggage

-Paige Herman-Axel

As if having persistent under-eye circles (even when you've had a full night's sleep) isn't bad enough, did you know that there are actually many causes of circles? Even if you could care less about the "why" and just want to get rid of them, it's important to figure out what's contributing to the shadows in order to select the best solution.

First, there's the obvious lack of sleep thing, so if a solid 8 hours of shut-eye fixes the problem, you can probably stop reading here. Then there's puffiness and fluid retention caused by too much salt or irritation like allergies. Your best bet in this case is to eliminate the offender and be on your merry way. But what if the cause is out of your control, like genetics or the aging process? This is when you may need a little extra help.

Discoloration: If you pull your under-eye skin taut and you still see the dark red-purple color, this is caused by pigment, and a variety of topical products can slowly by surely improve the problem. You can try Hylexin, a cream sold at department and beauty stores, or talk to your dermatologist or plastic surgeon about something stronger. He or she may likely recommend prescription-strength hydroquinone to lighten the skin over a few months. Hylexin: $95, sephora.com

Hollows: Genetics or age-related changes in the fat around the eyes can lead to a depression beneath the eyes that causes prominent shadows. Also called a tear trough deformity, these hollows are best treated by filling the area with injections of hyaluronic-acid based fillers like Restylane or Perlane. (Longer-lasting products can also be used, but you probably want to start with a more temporary product to make sure you like how it looks.) These injections take about 15 minutes and results last for six months or more, but you may experience bruising for up to a week (so please don't schedule the day before a big event!). When considering this treatment, be sure to select a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has extensive experience using injectables under the eyes since it's an extremely technique-dependent procedure.

Bags: Under-eye bags are really just pockets of fat, and you can blame your DNA or Father Time. Surgery is usually the treatment of choice for true under-eye bags, since the only way to get rid of these fat pockets is to physically remove them. Sure, surgery is not something to be taken lightly, but you may be surprised to know that recovery from eyelid surgery is relatively fast and comfortable (i.e. not that painful). If you do decide to move forward and schedule a consultation, make sure your surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology or the American Board of Ophthalmology with accreditation by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

A Man's Eye View

Mantyhose and Other Oddities for the Modern Man

Girly man or innovative trailblazer?

-Joseph Federico

Throughout history, there's always been that fine line between what's acceptable for men to wear and not wear; take for instance Louis XIV in France, who wore exuberant wigs and perdy, shiny slippers. How about the pharaoh's of Ancient Egypt who also wore wigs and the equivalent of today's modern "guyliner"? This trend of gender-bending the appropriate dress code is becoming more and more popular and there seems to be no sign whatsoever of it stopping anytime soon!

We've all heard of and seen drag queens wearing women's undergarments, right? They wear those sorts of things as part of the act...all fine and good, more power to them; but have you ever seen your husband (who's a manly-man in your eyes) or the quarterback of the football team prance around in pantyhose for comfort purposes? I think not... not until recently, anyway. E-mancipate.net, a website designed to "accelerate the acceptance of male pantyhose as a regular clothing item," brings gender bending to a whole new level...for reals. The site highlights pantyhose experiences from everyday men, and even offers suggestions on how to apply your "mantyhose" without tearing them.

The whole idea of "mantyhose" is not about being a perv with a sick fetish, but mainstreaming an offbeat idea into today's ever-changing society. If your man wants to be bold and brave, and would like to jump on the bandwagon, he can check out this list of venues to order his pair of hose.

Since we're in this sort of sideshow of gender bending, how do you feel about "man bags?" Personally, I'm all in favor of the "man bag;" I think it's a little more discrete than "mantyhose," and actually serves a purpose for the modern man. Where else are us men going to carry our blackberry, tissues, and laptop all at the same time? Check out this top 10 "man bag" list, brought to you by Kineda.com.

And last but not least, what're your thoughts on "medges," literally wedges for men? I don't think I'd be caught dead in those stilt-like catastrophes, but that's just me. Check out what Betty's own Julie Ryan Evans had to say about this new "trend."

All-in-all, I think today's man is becoming more and more in touch with his feminine side...at least we're expressive, don't you think?

Woman to Woman

Outsmarting Ingrown Hairs

Stop painful, unsightly bumps at the source

-Paige Herman-Axel

We're in the home stretch of summer, so there's no doubt that the last few months of shaving and waxing have resulted in at least one ingrown hair - a hair that curls back on itself and starts growing beneath the skin. The redness (and occasional pus - yuck!) associated with ingrown hairs is a sign of inflammation caused by a minor infection.

One of the key ways to prevent and treat ingrown hairs is by eliminating the top layers of skin that can trap the hair, but manual exfoliation with a scrub or loofah can hurt - and make existing ingrowns worse. This is why chemical based exfoliation with glycolic or salicylic acid is a better choice.

There are plenty of products designed for ingrown hairs, and they come in many formulations such as pads, liquids and creams. Personally, I like a cream to prevent dripping and so I can control where the product is going. (Think of it this way, liquid tends to drip downward which can get a little scary in the bikini area.)

Right now I'm using Ingrown Relief Lotion, which I discovered at Shobha, the New York City spa known for its hair removal. Used nightly (wait 48 hours after waxing) it exfoliates with glycolic acid, kills bump-causing bacteria with tea tree oil and soothes irritated skin with chamomile - all without parabens or artificial color or fragrance. Just a bit of advice before showing off your beautiful bikini line at the beach this weekend: Glycolic acid causes sun sensitivity, so unless you want to replace those bumps with a burn, make sure to apply sunscreen. $22, myshobha.com

Get a Leg Up

Are veins standing between you and a pair of short-shorts this summer?

-Paige Herman-Axel

I'm willing to bet that just about every woman reading this has a gripe or two about her legs-and if it's not cellulite, my number-two guess is veins.

First things first: let's distinguish between varicose veins and spider veins. The varicose variety are raised, wormy and sometimes painful; while spider veins lie just below the skin's surface and are smaller and more of a nuisance than a potential medical issue. The types of veins you have may dictate your course of treatment, so seeing a doctor to determine the kind of veins you have is actually important.

Cover ‘em
The easiest solution for camouflaging spider veins (and the color of varicose veins) is to cover them up with body makeup-and today's offerings, such as Dermablend Leg & Body Cover, can easily withstand a night on the town and even a day at the beach. The key to flawless coverage is finding the right shade for your skin and blending well, so make sure you check out how the color in a light similar to where you'll be when wearing the body makeup. For extra durability, top it off with setting powder. $25, dermablend.com

Beauty on the Go

Soothe your skin-and your soul

Pop one of these in your bag for a quick pick-me-up

-Paige Herman-Axel

If the summer heat is getting the best of you, salvation is as close as a quick spritz of Malie Organics Facial Tonic. Whether you choose to "Beautify" with the calm and sensual properties of Jasmine Rose, "Purify" with Guava Pineapple, "Renew" with Ginger Sweet Lime or "Rescue" with Lilikoi Lemongrass, each of these natural distillations quench your skin's thirst while improving your state of mind. They're also packed with protective antioxidants, soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients and clarifying antiseptics for skin-care on the go.

I never leave home without my "Beautify" to quell the effects of day-to-day stress and South Florida's 90-plus degree weather, but I also keep "Renew" in my fridge at home for an extra cooling treat at the end of a long day. My only gripe: I wish the bottles were bigger because I seem to be going through them pretty quickly these days! $45, malie.com

Forget the Grill, Get a Tooth Tattoo

Sounds much less painful, but why?

-Julie Ryan Evans

Have you been saving up for that grill? I really hope not, but if you are of the kind that likes to decorate their teeth, you may want to hold up. It seems a new trend could be on the horizon-tooth tattoos.

Forget the teeth whitening, and pick your favorite person or image to immortalize...in your mouth. Besides being just odd on so many levels, who really wants someone staring that closely at their teeth? Think that little piece of spinach could go unnoticed; no way if it's hanging off of your grandmother's head!

It's being reported (not very reliably, but still reported) that Joel Madden wanted to get one of Baby Harlow, and that Nicole Richie put her foot down on this one. Thank goodness!

On the hand, they would be less painful than a grill, and you could put one on a discreet back tooth, but then really, what's the point? Which of course, leads us right back to the issue of grills...

Would you ever consider a tooth tattoo?bT_icon_16x16_trans.gif

Mariah Carey: Fashion Don't

Simultaneously too much and too little

-Julie Ryan Evans

Mariah Carey has had her share of personal and professional struggles, but it's been great to see her pull it all together and come out on top lately. So I hate to criticize, but, when I saw her in this getup, ...well, it's just begging for commentary.

Simultaneously there's way too much going on-the bling, the boobs, the belly-and way too little (how could she possibly sit in that skirt?). Sure, hemlines are short this season, but this just looks bad AND she's 38! She's in great shape, but it doesn't change the fact that she's 38 and it just all looks like she's trying too hard.

Please try-a again, Mariah!

Drugstore Beauty Bargains

20 fabulous drugstore finds

-The Bettys

Now more than ever is the time to look at the shelves of your local drugstore for some of the hidden gems that can do wonders. Sometimes a new lipstick is all a girl needs to provide a little pick me up. And if you can get one for just a few bucks, then even better!

So we Bettys opened up our personal makeup bags and medicine cabinets and pulled together a list of our Top 20 favorite drugstore beauty bargains. Try them, we think you'll like them!

Lotions & Potions

1. Nivea Body Lotion - This everyday moisturizer isn't heavy, and it smells good. In fact our managing editor, April Daniels Hussar, once had a guy tell her it reminded him of his grandmother, but in a "good way."

2. Got Milk? Skin Milk, Shaving Milk - This creamy lotion, made with 5 percent real milk protein, is a nice change from the uber fluffy shaving creams that leave you rinsing your razor after every stroke. It provides a nice shaving surface and great moisture, but without all of the gunk.

3. St. Ives apricot scrub - "I've been using it since I was 14 - so that's like 21 years and running - it's the best scrub out there, and it's just $5.99!" raves editor Nicole Christie.

4. Johnson's Softcream extra care healing hand cream - Our hands would never make it through winter without this stuff! And it's not greasy-so you don't have to worry about your coffee cup slipping from your hands or grossing out those you greet.

5. Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser - This is great for a deep clean and can be used on VERY sensitive skin. It also helps reduce redness.

6. Lubriderm, Daily Moisture with SPF 15 Lotion - For all the strapless, sleeveless bare-legged fashions of summer, this is the perfect moisturizer and sunscreen in one-so no excuses for those burned shoulders after an impromptu lunch in the park!

For Your Eyes Only

7. Revlon Colorstay eyeliner - We love this eyeliner because...it actually stays on, unlike most eyeliner. "I have weird eyelids I guess because most other eye makeup just disappears after an hour, or migrates below my eyes, which is a great look if you're Courtney Love," says April Daniels Hussar, managing editor. "But this one stays put!" read more...

Look Good in Bed

10 pretty picks to perk up bedtime

-April Daniels Hussar

Long gone are the days when I slipped into something "comfortable" before snuggling up between the sheets. Lately, "comfortable" is no euphemism for "sexy"... it actually means... comfortable...and faaaarrr from flattering or sexy. I'm a mommy, but that's no excuse for the schleppy sleepwear I been subjecting my poor husband to nightly. As a general rule I can't get too too racy - my nighttime routine includes tucking in my 5-year-old daughter... so what's a glamma-mama to do? Stock up on these affordable, pretty nighttime picks, and toss those shapeless tees out the window!

Ah Vera, how do I love thee? I couldn't afford your wedding dresses, but I can afford your Kohl's line. Thanks for remembering the little people, Vera. I'm ordering this Simply Vera Vera Wang Dip-Dyed Chemise as soon as I finish writing this.
(Sale: $25.20)

AND this cutie Striped Pajama Set (Sale: $29.40)

I know Victoria's Secret: it's mass production, excellent marketing, and Heidi Klum. So I'm a sucker - what can I say. This Silk Stripe Nightie "keeps it sleek for sleep" indeed. (Clearance: $19.99).

Silver-Based Beauty

Treat yourself inside and out

-Paige Herman-Axel

Being in the beauty biz for almost a decade now, I've heard some pretty out-there stuff. It seems like some beauty product company or another has found a good use for just about everything, from diamonds (my opinion, save them for jewelry), mud (it does more than just make you dirty), bacteria (probiotics aren't just for Gwyneth Paltrow), and even crazier ingredients that would make you say, You want me to put what on my face?

When silver hit the scene, it was met with a lot of skepticism from beauty editors and doctors alike-until we saw the research. It's not just an ingredient to add cache or a few zeroes to the price tag; there's hard evidence of real health benefits.

First and foremost, silver kills bacteria - it's now used in FDA-approved burn dressings and can replace chlorine in pools. Keep an eye out for anti-bacterial silver-based hair- and toothbrushes in the years to come as well. Other studies have shown that silver plays a role in preventing disease-just ask the Chinese who have been using it for over 8,000 years.

You don't have to head to the Far East or some back-alley beauty boutique to get your daily dose of silver-based beauty. A Google search yields scores of offerings, but luckily I've done the legwork and found the cream of the crop for you.

Nano Silver Cyclic Soap
Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, Cyclic Soap is a perennial best seller (it's NYC's Zitomer), and it has a cult following to match. It kills the bacteria that cause blemishes, helps shrink pores, removes make-up like a charm thanks to the positively and negatively charged ions, moisturizes without clogging pores, and eliminates body odors caused by microorganisms on the skin. Need I say more? $45, zitomer.com

D'Arcy Laboratories Formula No. 05 Elemental Elixir
Reap the benefits of silver inside and out with this mist that works double duty as a dietary supplement and beauty mist. Just 15 sprays under the tongue twice a day provide immune system support and a post-cleansing spritz disinfects, tones and helps keep acne at bay. $65, darcyskincare.com

Project Runway Recap-Week One

Back to the grocery store

-Julie Ryan Evans

Spoiler Alert: If you don't want to know who's in and who's out, quit reading now.

In a flashback to season one, this year's PR contestants were sent to the grocery store for materials from which to form their creations. The lack of innovation was quite disappointing as so few of them actually used food--the obvious point of the challenge. Instead many flocked to the tablecloths and other material-like goods.

A few were more creative, like Daniel, who created a really cool dress out of plastic cups (think the kind you'd get a keg party) he ironed. I actually thought he deserved to win. Although, Kelli's winning design made of vacuum cleaner bags, push pins and such was very pretty. She's a definite frontrunner in the competition at this point.

My other favorite--based only on the intro and her candy and cookie dress--was Leanne, who called herself a "silent fashion assassin." She didn't get a lot of air time, so who knows, but she did stand out to me. Korto, I'd say, is also a potential favorite of mine. I'm thinking it's a woman's year to claim the title...

In the end, scary Jerry is out, thank goodness. That crazy psycho nurse shower curtain outfit was just "freaky" as Michael Kors said. I was surprised it was him that went though, because at least his freaky creation was a little more innovative than the trash bags that sulky Stella simply threw on her model. I predict her days are numbered. And side note, what on earth does she do to her eyelashes to make them all weird and individually clumped together like that-like she has about 15 huge lashes per eye?

Also sure to go early is Blayne--the melanoma-courting, tanning-bed-addict boy. I'm predicting a high annoying factor with him and all his "liciouses." And what the hell was that dress he made?

One thing is for sure, this season is going to be good. The cast of characters is diverse and sure to engage in lots of drama in between their stitches.

Tell us what you thought-who are you favorites? Did the right person get sent home?bT_icon_16x16_trans.gif

Tips on Trends with Curves: Learning Curves

-Michelle Weston, Divine Caroline

I love to shop. When I'm not shopping, I'm thinking about shopping, or reading about shopping. I consume fashion magazines with a barely controlled hunger: three square mags a day with snack glossies in between. I can't get enough of what's hot and what's not and I'm always looking for ways to incorporate the latest looks into my wardrobe. Note that I said incorporate the latest looks-I've learned from experience (though I've destroyed all the photographic evidence!) that shopping the trends can send you into fashion-victim land, especially when you've got curves. The good news is that you can be curvy and trendy. The bad news? You just need to rein it in a little, ladies!

Know Yourself
There are some trends, like super-short miniskirts or super-skinny jeans that don't look so super on everyone. It's so important to know yourself-to know what suits you and what doesn't suit you-before you shop for anything, especially trends. You can still play with what's out there and have fun experimenting with new styles and adding touches of trends, but don't try to force (literally!) a fashion item into your wardrobe just because you've seen it on the runways and in the magazines. You'll never see me in skinny-leg or thong-baring jeans because I know they just don't look-or feel-good on me.

Take a long look in the mirror. You are a beautiful woman, and knowing yourself is the first step toward being yourself, fashionably and otherwise.

Look at your favorite items of clothing, the ones you feel you look best in. Think about the shapes of the items people compliment you most on. Enlist an honest friend or family member to help you ascertain what really suits you. Having a few classic pieces and shapes that suit is the secret to a solid wardrobe, regardless of your size. Once you know your foundation pieces and shapes, you can be flexible to incorporating-yes, note again "incorporating"-the trends.

Keep It Symmetrical
When considering which trends work for you, look at the proportions of the garments and of your body. Gauchos, Capri's Bermuda shorts, and voluminous longer skirts are big for bottoms right now, but these styles need to be balanced by the rest of your outfit, or you'll get lost in your look. Pair full shapes from the waist down with form fitting tops from waist up. Then add a colorful ‘40s platform shoe or some natural wedge heels to create a longer line for your frame.

One Trend at a Time
If you're wearing an A-line skirt, a wider belt, chunky plastic bangles or cuffs, and beaded long earrings all together, you might want to consider taking one thing off before you walk out the door. All those trends just end up canceling each other out. We can't see the trees for the forest!

Resources
There are so many fantastic and fashionable resources for full-figured females. Did you know that stores and sites like Macys, Saks, and Old Navy all have designer lines that size up? I love that Old Navy sizes up to a size 20 in missy for those of us who do not need as much ease in the waist or through the hips and shoulder. I love shopping Lafayette 148, Lauren/Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein Sportswear, and Michael by Michael Kors. Lane Bryant is also a solid style destination for the larger lady who loves to shop.

Jeans: Check out Svoboda (also available at Nordstrom) for fashionable and flattering styles. Their fantastic not-your-old-aunt's-jeans styles come with a smoothing Lycra panel in the tummy area.

Dresses: You might be tempted by all the fabulous Spring and Summer dresses out there and feeling the need to add a dress to your wardrobe-I know I am. A-line or wrap styles are very flattering for the fuller figure. My first go-to for a great dress is Zaftique or Kiyonna.

Tops: One of my new favorite resources for cheap yet chic trendy tops is Bandlu. My favorite tee resource is definitely Gap or Saks for designer Marina Rinaldi's tees in Italian jersey.

Pants: When looking at pants, know that a higher rise in the rear keeps your behind covered and contours voluptuous curves without bulges and gaps at the waist. A flared leg trouser balances any extra width "up top" and if you have extra bootie going on back there, make sure that jean pockets sit correctly and are not adding extra bulk. Check out Cennev for a variety of styles. For an easy evening look, pair an embellished short jacket with a pair of Nordstrom's fluid silk wide leg trousers to make a hip statement in style.

Jackets: Pairing a fantastic cropped jacket with pants will result in "the new suit" for the season. Check the I.N.C. collection at Macy's or go for a white cropped jacket at Fashion to Figure.

Don't be Shy!
When in doubt, ask for help. Most women don't realize that a knowledgeable salesperson will be enormously helpful in identifying trends that suit you. If you don't feel comfortable wearing those low-rise jeans, speak up. A good salesperson will work with you to find medium or even high-rise styles, which happen to be very trendy right now. You can also contact Association of Image Consultants International for a list of image consultants across the country.

Have a Good Hair Day

The latest line of salon-borne products has a conscience

-Paige Herman-Axel

As anyone who's tried organic hair care products knows, those Earth- and body-friendly benefits can come at a cost, like less suds and sometimes a less than silky-soft feel after washing. I've long been on the hunt for a line of salon-worthy hair products that doesn't include nasty stuff like synthetic chemicals, parabens, sulfates and the like, and I'm happy to report that I think I found it.

If you're beauty obsessed like me, you surely know Jonathan Antin from his Bravo reality show "Blow Out," and you probably remember when he agonized over the launch of his line, Jonathan Product in season one. Well Jonathan is at it again, but this time he's introducing Green Rootine, a collection of all-natural formulations that are jam-packed with vitamins and antioxidants to nourish and protect the hair and scalp.

The line includes a shampoo, conditioner and silkening crème that can be used to style wet hair or smooth your strands post-blowout, and the trio is designed to be used together on all types of hair (color treated, too). $20 to $24, sephora.com

Does Victoria Beckham Need to Spice up her Look?

Same haircut, same style are getting a little a boring

-Julie Ryan Evans

I have nothing against Vitoria Beckham, and I don't really care if she ever smiles or not. In fact, I even watched her reality show "Victoria Beckham: Coming to America" (at least once) before it disappeared.

And I really admired her style for awhile, but now I'm pretty much over it. All of the tucked-in shirts, super fitted skirts, sky-high heels and buttoned-up couture are just making me uncomfortable. Some of it is gorgeous, no doubt. But I never see her in anything else.

In the airport, at her kids' soccer games...would someone please give the woman some flip flops?!

And is she EVER going to change her hairstyle? Let's see her spice things up once in awhile! ...and relax a little bit.

Although perhaps when you're husband is one of the most gorgeous specimens on this earth, that's what you do to keep his interest...

Smooth Sailing

Summer is in full swing so here's your guide for keeping stubble in check

-Paige Herman-Axel

Keeping skin smooth and hair-free is an uphill battle, and until laser hair reduction gets less time consuming (and less expensive!) most of us are slaves to more archaic hair removal methods. Whether you're loyal to one or choose to take many paths to hairlessness, here's your guide to the pros and cons of the most popular. You just might find yourself trying something new this summer...

Shaving
You'd be hard-pressed to find a woman without a razor in her shower. Whether you opt for an electric razor or a high-tech version with numerous blades and bells and whistles like moisturizing strips or vibration, shaving cuts the hair at the skin's surface. And just to set the record straight, shaving does not make your hair grow back faster, darker or thicker. It just seems that way because you feel the flat edge when it grows in as opposed to the tapered end you get when you remove hair from the root.
PROS: Fast, easy, no appointment necessary, cheap
CONS: Only a day or so of smoothness until you have to do it again, potential to cut yourself. And of course - razor burn.

Waxing
While it may seem like torture to some, waxing is a way of life for many women. Personally, I wax from the knee up (reserving the razor for daily use on my lower legs).
Although you probably want to leave Brazilian bikini waxes to the pros, you can save time and money by waxing your legs, arms and other body parts at home. But to make sure you know what you're doing before slathering yourself with hot wax, check out Completely Bare's first-ever At-Home Waxing Webinar on July 17. Cindy Barshop, founder of Completely Bare and smooth skin guru, offers up the advice of her experienced technicians to walk to through the basics and answer your questions free of charge-without having to make an appointment.
PROS: Because waxing removes hair from the root beneath the skin, you get significantly longer lasting results than with shaving.
CONS: Discomfort, you have to let hair grow out to about a quarter-inch long before you can wax again.

Threading
A centuries-old fix, threading is fast, simple and quite precise, which is why its many women's hair removal method of choice for the eyebrows. There's some debate as to its origins (Turkey, India and the Middle East have all staked their claim), but there's no doubt that threading works. The only equipment necessary for threading is a spool of thread and someone who knows how to do it, and the process involves twisting a loop of thread over the hairs to remove them from the root
PROS: Great for anyone using Retin-A or who otherwise can't tolerate waxing, results last for two weeks to four weeks.
CONS: May be hard to find a salon or spa that offers threading outside large cities.

Laser hair reduction
Today it's possible to zap your way to hairlessness-but it's important to realize that laser hair reduction is a medically based procedure that's not without risk. Because lasers are attracted to the pigment (the color) in both the hair and your skin, different lasers are recommended for those with different skin tones, and the wrong laser can mean burns or permanent pigment changes so be sure to see a professional with experience treating hair and skin similar to yours. For optimal safety and results, you should not get laser treatments when tan, so you may want to wait until summer's over.
PROS: Long-term hair reduction that's easily maintained with periodic follow-up treatments.
CONS: Hefty price tag, can take up to 10 or more sessions for maximum results.

When Life Gives You Lemons...

How to get the most out of your fruit bowl

-Carolyn French

When life gives you lemons make yourself beautiful! This colorful little fruit is useful in more ways than one. Besides containing massive amounts of vitamin C, it also serves as a versatile organic beauty remedy.

Test out the suggested uses below and learn why lemons are being hailed as the most versatile produce of the summer.

Acne Treatment (who knew!)
Lemon juice is extremely antibacterial and can be used when your CoverGirl just isn't enough. Simply combine 2 teaspoons fresh-squeezed juice with ½ teaspoon rose water. Immerse a cotton ball in the mixture and gently sweep across face. Keep it on overnight, and wash off in the morning.

Collagen Stimulant
Due to the abundance of vitamin C, lemon essential oil has been proven to help generate softer, suppler skin, plus it increases circulation. But be mindful when purchasing this product; if it smells overly harsh it's most likely been mixed with artificial ingredients. A great brand is Aura Cacia - their organic lemon essential oil is divine and a mere $6.05 for .33 oz.

Fingernail Therapy
Have your phalanges lost their natural luster? Have a go at soaking your nails in lemon juice for 10 minutes, and afterwards brush them with an equal blend of white vinegar & warm water.

Hair Highlighter
Sick of paying top dollar at every salon in town? To add streaks of blonde, or to lighten your lovely mane, try this age-old trick! After acquiring unprocessed lemon juice, squeeze a bit into your hair, and apply to desired areas. Because you will need to go outside for a couple of hours to perfect the look, sunscreen is recommended. Step back inside about every 20 minutes and rinse to check on the progress. If unsatisfied with the results, simply repeat the steps.

Tip: Since hair appears darker when wet, blow dry a few strands to get the full effect.

Thrift store finds

One's trash is another's treasure

-Jill Jordan

I found a jewel tone blue top by Diane von Furstenberg today for $2.99!

This is just one of my many amazing thrift store finds. The other day, Goodwill was selling all shoes and clothes for $2, and I got four pairs of shoes, two tops, and a scarf for about $15! There are four things I love about thrift stores:

1. You're helping the environment by recycling clothing.

2. You're donating money to a cause most of the time. Goodwill, for example, has rehabilitation programs and scholarships they give out with the money they receive for the items they sell.

3. You're buying something that you won't see on other people. I don't know about you, but I hate when I'm wearing something I love that someone else has.

4. These finds are cheap!

How can you resist?

Melt-proof Summer Makeup

5 tips for staying cool and beautiful in the summer heat

-Claudia Chan

Nothing says "summer" like a perfectly bronzed face, smoking-hot eyes and pretty lip gloss. However, 90-degree days can have you looking like Amy Winehouse after a night in the clinker - or heck, on any day. De-grease and get summer savvy with the help of melt-proof makeup guaranteed to stay put, so you can stay gorgeous.

Sheckys.com President and resident beauty expert Claudia Chan has the top tips and products guaranteed to keep you looking fresh all summer long.

1. Cover Your Bases.
Another late night pool party? Finding the perfect concealer will help to erase the evidence of a late-night before you can say 'espresso,' and will also stay put during beach-side trysts. Try a pin dot of Amazing Cosmetics' Amazing Concealer ($40). This concentrated, waterproof powerhouse perfectly conceals dark circles, blemishes, scars and sun spots without resembling spackle. Then slip into something more comfortable with Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Second Skin Nude Makeup SPF 12 ($45). Created especially for summer wear, this weightless wonder glides on to perfect and minimize pores with a velvety powder finish.

2. It's All in the Eyes.
Do you look like you've replaced your eye shadow with charcoal briquettes? Lighten up and stay smudge-free with Stila's Silk Eyeshadow Wash ($22) in Kitten, a shimmering pink liquid shadow that transforms into a slip of sheer color upon drying. Then call in sick and head for the Caribbean with Clarins Waterproof Eye Pencil ($22) in Turquoise, a glimmering powder liner in the season's hottest sea-blue hue.

Even Twiggy would bat an eyelash at Tarte's dramatic 4 Day Stay Lash Stain ($18). It applies as mascara, but acts like a short-term lash tinting to darken and define lashes for up to four days with no running.

3. Body Beautiful
If you've ever wished for perfect skin all over, Makeup For Ever's Face & Body Liquid Makeup ($38) has got you covered. The waterproof formula dries satiny smooth in three minutes and creates a flaw-free canvas on which to display the season's sexy swimwear. For nighttime, the real sparkler this 4th of July is Bare Minerals Jade Body Minerals ($39), a twinkling body powder formulated with real yellow jade. It subtly glistens on arms and shoulders for hours without leaving a glitter cloud behind.

4. Pinch Me.
Finally, a cheek color that lasts from morning to margaritas without slowing down! Try Laura Geller Tint Hint ($22.50) in Just Pinched for an easy-to-use, easier-to-blend stain that warms as you wear it, creating the perfect shade. Use the included finger mitts to keep fingertips stain-free.

5. Final Fix.
For a final touch, curb your makeup's urge to wander with Clarins Fix' Make-Up Refreshing Mist ($25). This delicate, rose-scented hydrating mist keeps makeup close to home while refreshing and restoring parched skin.
