File under: totally bizarre. “Polo-obsessed” multi-millionaire John Goodman, 48, has legally adopted his 42-year old girlfriend, Heather Laruso Hutchins, in what appears to be a money-motivated move.

Goodman is under criminal investigation for killing a young man while driving drunk -- he allegedly ran a stop sign and plowed into 23-year-old Scott Wilson’s car, which was pushed into a ravine, where Wilson drowned. Goodman is also facing a civil lawsuit by Wilson’s parents. Somehow, it would seem, this adoption gives Goodman access to a huge chunk of change otherwise reserved in trust for his real, biological children.

Newser reports: “The adoption means Heather Laruso Hutchins will be entitled to a third of a $200 million trust fund that Goodman, who inherited his father's air-conditioning fortune, set up for his two biological children.”

I just ... words ... fail. I have so many burning questions! Like -- does this mean marriage is off the table? (Ewww!)

How do his actual children feel about this maneuver? Whats’s worse -- an evil stepmother or a NEW SIBLING?

As for how this might affect their bedroom relationship ... let’s not go there.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the judge overseeing Goodman’s criminal case called the adotion "surreal" and a step into a "legal twilight zone" in a recent case-related ruling.

Indeed.

"By way of this adoption, John Goodman now effectively owns one third of the trust assets," the William Wilsons' attorney, Scott Smith told the Palm Beach Post. "It cannot go unrecognized that he chose to adopt his 42-year-old adult girlfriend as opposed to a needy child."
