Why Does Adrian Grenier Need His Own iPad App?
Adrian Grenier is launching an iPad app called Reckless Adrian Grenier. But is it really necessary?
It’s true: Entourage star Adrian Grenier is launching his own iPad app. It’s called Reckless Adrian Grenier, and it is, according the Hollywood Reporter, “personality-centric” (whatever that means).
I realize that being a celebrity is all about branding yourself, but is this really necessary?
The Hollywood Reporter goes on to note that this is the first time a celebrity has gone independent with their own branded content app. Adrian, who is the president of the independent production company Reckless Productions (hence the app’s name), is planning on using Reckless Adrian Grenier to keep his fans informed about his work and his company, as well as to engage socially with them. In a statement, the actor/producer said, “By engaging with fans directly, producers can be truly independent in their film-making, including financial autonomy and, moreover, create the type of movie experience that fans really want.” This, of course, is assuming that fans know enough about filmmaking to do so.
I guess what I’m having trouble figuring out is how (if at all) this app does anything more than what Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and all the rest of the social media platforms out there already do. Apparently Reckless Adrian Grenier will make it easy to access all of Adrian’s accounts on these platforms; but what else is there? Plans for the app include launching trailers, behind-the-scenes footage, and some wacky-sounding feature called “Theatre of Your Life” (“you are the star and your Facebook friends are your audience!”). Behind-the-scenes footage sounds fun… but again: Why exactly does this need to be an app? Aren’t there already ways to share all of these things?
The basic app is free; naturally, though, there are as-yet-unspecified additional bits and pieces users can pay for (there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Or app. Or whatever). At least all proceeds from the app’s sales go to the SHFT Initiative, a charity founded by Adrian geared towards promoting and raising awareness about sustainability issues.
