Ah, I remember my first time so well. We tried to make it so special. My roommate agreed to spend the night across the hall with someone else so we'd have privacy. My boyfriend and I pushed the two single dorm room beds together (yes, I was a freshman in college before I gave it up). We left the desk lamp on for ambience (you know, because candles weren't allowed. No open flames!). It was magical and memorable - not because of the atmosphere, but because I was with someone I loved, at a place and time of our choosing.
Natalie Dylan is going to lose her virginity in a memorable way too - because she is going to be making millions of dollars on it. Oh yeah, and she'll be giving it up to a complete stranger, someone she doesn't love, quite possibly someone she doesn't even like, or for that matter know anything about (except that he had enough money to take the bid).
More than 10,000 men are competing for a one-night stand with the 22 year old, with bids all the way up to $3.7 million - more than enough to pay for that master's degree in Family and Marriage Therapy she says she wants.
Dylan, who already has a degree in women's studies, claims that she decided to offer her virginity to the highest bidder after watching her sister pay for a college education by working as a prostitute for a mere three weeks.
She told the Daily Telegraph:
"I think me and the person I do it with will both profit greatly from the deal".
"I know that a lot of people will condemn me for this because it's so taboo but I really don't have a problem with that.
"My study is completely authentic in that I truly am auctioning my virginity but I am not being sold into this. I'm not being taken advantage of in any way."
Mmmh. I see.
Call me crazy, but isn't she, um, SELLING her virginity?
I consider myself pretty forward thinking, and certainly she can do what she likes - it's her body, she is an adult, and I am all for supporting the sex worker industry as a whole, but come on, let's call this what it is: prostitution. (By the way, she's running the auction out of the only state in the union in which prostitution is legal, but I'm totally sure that's just a coincidence.)
Am I insane for not seeing the merit of this as a study? I don't need any in-depth research to tell me that old dudes will pay a LOT of money for the chance to take a girl's virginity. They are still just as dirty old as they were young - only now they have the means to pay for it. And, as forward thinking as I am, I can't help but believe that your virginity is still something special, and not something to be sold off to the highest bidder.
But maybe I AM just crazy and it's just not that big of a deal. What do you think? Are the days of treasuring your virginity just done and gone?
