Tom Cruise + Katie Holmes Have Reached a Divorce Settlement Surprisingly Quickly
Well, that was fast: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have already reached a divorce settlement—and they did it without damaging their daughter, Suri. Good for them.
Well, this is somewhat surprising: In spite of the fact that the world was expecting a messy divorce battle between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the former husband-wife duo have reached a settlement less than two weeks after Katie initially filed the papers.
The settlement has been confirmed by attorneys for both actors. Katie’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, told People, “The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life;” meanwhile, Tom’s longtime lawyer Bert Fields kept it a little simpler when he told TMZ, “The Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes case has been settled with a signed agreement. Tom is really pleased we got there, and so am I.”
It’s gratifying to know that the major focus of the settlement was the well-being of Tom and Katie’s six-year-old daughter, Suri; a statement from both of their reps recently said, “We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.” Dealing with your parents divorcing at such a young age is never fun, but at least Tom and Katie were both very clearly set on protecting their daughter, instead of duking it out with her in the middle. According to the settlement, Suri will live primarily with Katie; this makes a lot of sense, given that she has very clearly been the primary caregiver for most of Suri’s life. Tom, however, will have generous visitation rights.
Naturally, Tom and Katie are aiming to keep the details of the deal confidential; and just as naturally, the rumors about said details are whirling. We probably won’t get much more confirmed information about it, though, so the conspiracy theorists will probably continue to go nuts for at least a little while longer. Said Jonathan Wolfe (Katie’s attorney, in case you forgot), “There are numerous inaccuracies in the reports regarding the purported contents of the agreement reached between the parties. The agreement is confidential and its terms will not be disclosed.”
In spite of this, however, TMZ is claiming that they’ve got a hold of some of the details. For the curious: According to the gossip site, the agreement includes something they’re calling “the Suri Clause,” which allegedly outlines the things both parents are and are not allowed to do with their daughter (and yes, it’s apparently extremely complicated). Here’s what we know: 1) Katie will essentially have primary physical custody of Suri, but Tom has significant custodial time with her; and 2) there are a boatload of things neither parent is allowed to talk to Suri about, including but not limited to religion and Scientology, These restrictions will lighten up a little as Suri gets older. In light of Wolfe’s statement, however, the accuracy of these “details” should probably be taken with a pretty large grain of salt.
Anyway, glad to know that Tom and Katie managed to settle the whole thing quickly and relatively painlessly. Suri may have a reputation for being a tiny little drama queen, but no child should ever be stuck in the middle of a messy divorce battle. Good on her parents for protecting her as much as possible
