Join ‘The Hunger Games’ in the Fight Against Hunger
Want to help hungry kids receive the food they so desperately need? Find out how you can join the stars of ‘The Hunger Games’ in this worthy cause.
Hunger Games fans, you may have balked at the injustice of the teenaged Katniss having to scrounge around the forest for food to feed her little sister. But though the Games are fiction, world hunger is a devastating reality–and it’s killing children across the globe.
According to the World Food Programme (WFP), a nonprofit committed to fighting world hunger, more people this year will die from starvation than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. Worst of all, many of these victims are innocent children: the WFP reports that 1 in 4 youths living in developing countries is underweight.
But there is a simple step we can all take right now to help all the men, women, and children who go to bed with an empty stomach every night. The Hunger Games, WFP, and Feeding America have teamed up in a partnership to fight hunger. If you have just $5 and a Facebook page, you can give a student the gift of nourishing meals for a whole month.
“When it comes to children and hunger, the effects can be irreversible,” reads the Hunger Games Fight Hunger site. “Without the right nutrition, millions of children will never have a chance at a bright future.”
You can head over to the site now to test your knowledge on world hunger with a quiz (bonus: you could win signed Hunger Games memorabilia by participating), watch a short video of cast members like Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson talk about the importance of this cause, and make a donation. You can pay by Paypal, credit card, or SMS.
If you reside in the US, 25% of your donation will be sent to Feeding America to aid the 1 in 6 Americans who don’t have the food they need. If you’re an international donor, your money will help the WFP provide nutritious school meals for kids all over the world.
The Hunger Games movie premieres on March 23, 2012. For less than the price of a ticket, you can help feed a child in need.
Let’s help put the odds in every kid’s favor.
