The Ex-Files: Can You Be Friends With Your Ex?
When being friends with your ex works (and when it doesn’t!)
Breaking up is hard to do. We have all been there. Sometimes, the breaks are clean. You each go your separate ways and you never hear from one another again. These are what I like to call, “the love ‘em and leave ‘em” relationships. No Facebook drama ensues. No suicidal phone calls at three in the morning. Just a good old fashioned break-up.
Cue 2011. Nothing is simple, anymore. In the modern world we have created, with social media networks interconnecting us 24/7 and cell phones that let us send instant “sex-t” messages, it’s almost impossible to completely remove yourself from someone’s life. So, what are the new rules of engagement? Or, in this case, “un-engagement”? When is it appropriate to stay in touch, and when is it time to change your Facebook status from “it’s complicated” to “single?”
Let’s take a look at some of the situations one can find themselves in during a break-up and see if you know when it’s okay to stay friends with your ex, and when it’s time to join the witness protection program.
