The brunette bombshell is back on top, thanks to leading ladies and princesses alike! As a natural brunette myself, I’m excited to see the ‘dark horse’ gracing red carpets and runways everywhere. Color trends come and go, but we can thank Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez for bringing baliage back into the spotlight, utilizing hand-painting techniques to create their soft and subtle brown highlights.

Mary-Kate Olsen and Drew Barrymore made roots cool again by popularizing the ombre trend, which is characterized by graduated color (darker roots that gradually lighten all the way towards the ends). Then along came the iconic Royal Wedding and princess brown now reigns supreme. I love Kate (Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) and Pippa Middleton’s effortless brunette hues, as they are potentially all natural with just a glaze or demi-permanent tint.

From chestnut and chocolate to mahogany and espresso, there’s a shade of brunette out there for everyone. Picking the one that’s right for you can be tricky, as going too dark can overpower and wash out your complexion. It’s very important to go dark gradually to find your perfect hue. A great trick for this is to look for the color flecks in your eyes. If you have warm-toned eyes or warm flecks, then choose gold and red-based browns, such as those sported by Jennifer Lopez and Emma Stone. If you have cool-toned eyes or flecks, then you’d look best with a shade that has violet, ash or neutral undertones, such as those of Megan Fox, Katie Holmes and Katy Perry.
