Lindsay Lohan The Canyons

By now, you’ve probably heard about The Canyons, right, Bettys? Y’know—that microbudget indie film Lindsay Lohan shot last summer with a script written by Bret Easton Ellis of American Psycho fame and co-starring porn star James Deen (real name Bryan Matthew Sevilla)? We know that as much as you try not to be, you’re super curious about the movie—we are, too—so here. Have a sneak peek at a scene from it!

The initial goal of The Canyons was to make a $250,000 film look like a $10 million film. Rated NC-17 and funded through kickstarter, it tells the story of Christian, a classic Ellis sociopath, and his emotionally and economically dependent girlfriend, Tara. It shot for three weeks last summer—and the New York Times Magazine has a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, appropriately titled “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie.” Included in the online version of the article is a scene from the movie, which ultimately ended up getting rejected from Sundance, but which is being put up for sale by William Morris Endeavor later this month. Why cast LiLo? The article brings up an interesting point, which is this: The primary reason Lindsay is having so much trouble getting work these days is because no one will insure her. Your standard Hollywood movie requires insurance, and since Lindsay has such a bad track record, no one will insure her anymore. But with The Canyons, the film is so low-budget that they didn’t NEED to get insurance, and voila—say hello to LiLo.

The clip is just under three minutes long. In it, LiLo wakes up next to James Deen (who plays an outright evil person in the film, but who is by all accounts a nice young man and super professional while he’s working. Fun fact: Did you know his parents are rocket scientists? Me neither!) determines that the smartphone sitting on her bedside table isn’t hers, gets up to look for it, and, well… insanity ensues. Take a look for yourself:

Thoughts, Bettys? I’ve commented before that I’ve never quite seen the talent that so many others see lurking beneath the surface of Lindsay’s numerous problems, but the New York Times Magazine’s article describes a skilled but flighty and unpredictable actress who blew this scene away while shooting. I’m still not totally sure I see it, but that might also be because whenever I look at Lindsay Lohan, I don’t see her characters—I see Lindsay Lohan. But maybe that’s just me. In any event, we’ll have to wait and see whether The Canyons gets a theatrical release—and how it’s received when it does.
