Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie are best friends. They've known each other for a bazillion years. They put up with each other's quirks and the rubber ducky makes a great baby substitute. But does that mean they should walk down the aisle?

The New York Daily News reports that there's an online petition with 700 (yes, 700) signatures requesting a big, fat wedding. Part of the petition reads, "We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful..."It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different."

Yes, there have been rumors that Bert and Ernie are gay. But, can we get real here? First of all, they're muppets. Secondly, anytime two people, err muppets are close friends, the gay rumor pops up. Thirdly, who fanatasizes about muppet sex? And if you're thinking about muppet sex, you have too much time on your hands and a possible issue with reality.

As for Sesame Street's stance on the wedding, they issued a statement: "Bert and Ernie are best friends. "They were created to teach preschoolers people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

"Even though the Sesame Street Muppets ... possess many human traits and characteristics, they have no sexual orientation."
