As someone who keeps up with celebrity news (and I’m not ashamed to admit it!), I’m fascinated by the stories of infidelity, the secrets inadvertently blurted out during interviews, the extraordinarily expensive clothes and makeup that cost more than I make in a year.

But even I was taken aback by the photo a gossip magazine posted of Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, who is all of four years old, happily jumping into a pool. Never mind that this was a grotesque invasion of the child’s privacy (and it was), the most appalling thing about the item was the headline: “Shiloh, 4, Wears Boys’ Swim Trunks.” As the magazine pointed out, this was an “EXCLUSIVE!” photo.

Well, call the Pulitzer Prize committee. I think we’ve got a landmark piece of journalism here.

Within minutes, the site racked up dozens of comments from people who have never even seen this little girl, let alone talked to her, but who nonetheless feel entitled to judge her. “There is something not right here,” one poster said. “I think Angelina is going too far in letting her be a little boy,” another commented.

Then there were the commenters who got right down to business. “When she grows up, she’ll probably be gay, and want a sex change,” one said. Other posters repeatedly invoked the name of Chaz Bono, Cher’s child, who underwent a sex change from female to male.
