Depression

October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month. Each year, over 21 million American are diagnosed with some form of depression. And believe it or not, some of Hollywood’s finest are included in this statistic.

People may wonder how celebrities could possibly suffer from depression. They’re beautiful, live in multi-million dollar mansions, drive Masseratis and have the careers most can only dream of. But depression is a disease with no prejudice. It can affect men and women of any class and any race.

In honor of Depression Awareness Month, here are six celebs that have suffered from depression. Just because they seem to have it all, doesn’t mean they haven’t struggled too.

After touring with Michael Jackson in the late ‘80’s, Sheryl Crow fell into a two-year depression. However, the musician has reported that she’d struggled with depression since childhood. She recalls many days of never getting dressed or leaving the house.

With the help of Prozac and therapy, Crow was able to come back from her emotional plummet.

Actor and comedian Russell Brand suffers from manic depression (also known as bipolar disorder.) In the past, he struggled with bulimia, drug and alcohol addiction and self-mutilation. The Get Him to the Greek star eventually got help, thanks to the persuasion of his agent. Brand hasn’t taken had a drink in eight years. He reveals more about his struggles with depression and addiction in his memoir, My Booky Wook.
