Sometimes, jukebox musicals make me sad, mostly because I think they just might be responsible for the death of musical theatre. But every so often, something like Rock of Ages comes along, and it’s just ridiculous enough to lend a little bit of credibility to the jukebox musical trend. And hey, guess what? It’s a movie now! Check out the trailer here:

Rock of Ages first debuted on Broadway in 2009, starring former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis (who, coincidentally, I once saw as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at a tiny little rep theatre in New Hampshire—but that’s a story for another time). Its story is a pretty standard “boy meets girl, boy wants to be rocker, girl wants to actress, hey, let’s try to make it in Hollywood together” deal; however, as it takes place in 1987, it’s soundtracked entirely by hair band tunes: Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian,” Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” (of course)… you get the picture. And it’s goofy and wacky and silly—and all kinds of hilarious. So it was only a matter of time before they made it into a movie, right?
Starring Diego Boneta as Drew the would-be rocker and Julianne Hough as Sherrie the aspiring actress, the film of Rock of Ages also features Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Cruise. Looks like Tommy finally found a vehicle that's crazy enough to match HIS particular brand of crazy! It’s due for release this upcoming summer.
Tell us: What do you think? Is Rock of Ages crazy-awesome, or just plain crazy?
