What happens when two perfumers meet on the floor of a posh, chi-chi New York City boutique department store? You’d expect stilettos at dawn, right? In the case of Maria McElroy, creator of the Aroma M line of fragrances and Alexis Karl, creator of the Scent by Alexis house of fragrances, it was instant friendship.

As women perfumers in a male-dominated field, they became supportive of each other’s work as well as fans of each other’s fragrance lines. One sunny day, the two were spending time in a park; the idea for the House of Cherry Bomb perfumes was born. Get ‘em now at BettyConfidential Shop for 30% off!

What is the House of Cherry Bomb? It’s two delicious fragrances: Rebel Angel and Truth or Dare. Both are born from Alexis and Maria’s love of music and the heady atmosphere of the rock n’ roll lifestyle. Music that moves your soul, clothing that reflects your mood and that electricity you get when something moves you; from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.

Read on for our e-chat with Maria and Alexis. Super cool women who broke boundaries while listening to punk music and having the times of their lives.

BettyConfidential: How did you become a perfumer?

Maria McElroy: After spending seven years in Japan and studying Aroma Therapy in Australia, I returned to the US, where my newly found adoration of fragrance led me to experimentation in my own home. Imagine bottles lining every surface and essential oils wafting through the rooms cluttered with hand- printed Japanese papers and cherry blossoms (my flower of inspiration!). I started creating perfume; bottling them in delicate glass adorned with silks and velvet and friends started asking for more and more them. It became clear this was my calling.

BettyConfidential: What is the education process like to become a perfumer?

MM: I have an Aroma Therapy background, and am actually a licensed aroma therapist. I would say my olfactory training came from this as well as from Kodo, the Japanese Incense Ceremony.

Kodo is like a very elegant game from the esteemed Heian era. One smells the burning incense in a small brassier and must describe the perfumed elements in poetic language, creating art from olfactory art.

BettyConfidential: What are the steps to create a fragrance and how long can it take to make a scent?

MM: First I imagine the fragrance, often in colors and then I begin to put the notes together. Some perfumes can come very easily; others can take longer as in the case of Geisha Rouge, it was the hardest scent for me. It took many years to perfect the concept of the scent. Geisha Rouge has no florals, yet contains the most notes I have used to date. It is one of my more complex blends and I find it to be one of the most sexy, erotic scents in my line.
