We chatted with Petra Strand, creator of the Pixi beauty brand and this upcoming collaboration, about that saucy little pixie we’ve come to know and love.
Betty Confidential: How did this collaboration come about?
Petra Strand: The team at Disney approached us. We were thrilled that they wanted to work with us. It’s the perfect collaboration as this Disney icon is the most famous Pixi of all! Tinker Bell is an ever youthful and illuminating beauty. This is a look that Pixi reinforces through our cosmetic offerings, which enhance every woman’s natural beauty and glow.
BC: What was it like working with Disney Character Artist John Quinn? How did he guide you through the line?
PS: It was very exciting! We were given access to the Disney archives for inspiration for the packaging and the product names. I did a mood board, which John interpreted and immediately made Tinker Bell a true classic beauty. She’s the perfect model for this new collection. It’s all about a youthful glow for spring!
BC: What do you love most about Tinker Bell?
PS: She is timeless and exudes that naturally radiant Pixi glow. She has such a big personality – I love her moodiness, cheekiness, honesty and sense of humor. She embodies every girl’s dream and she’s a great role model for any woman.
BC: This isn’t the Tink from our childhoods! How did you manage to come up with this vintage, glam Tinker Bell?
PS: I wanted a more grown up, “beauty icon” Tinker Bell that embodied my vision of true classic beauty. John did exactly this with his magical pen. I loved his first draft and it’s the one we are using!
I was inspired by Tinker Bell’s magical environment for the shades included in the collection. For example, in the Fairy Face Palette, I was inspired by budding roses, berry nectars and dew at dawn. The lush shades are universally flattering and perfectly pigmented.
BC: How are these products similar to the Pixi items we already know and love?
PS: Just like the rest of the Pixi collection, PixiGlow products allow women to enhance and perfect their healthy, natural glow. The PixiGlow collection turns an ordinary look into an extraordinary one while celebrating every day with a touch of magic and that final sprinkle of twinkle. The collection suits all, as it is ageless, timeless and feels fresh for spring.
BC: What was the most difficult part about creating this line?
PS: Finding names for the products and copy that work both in the beauty world I work in and keep true to the world of Tinker Bell. It was hard and took some time, but I’m so thrilled with what we came up with– it really works!
BC: What did you enjoy the most?
PS: Creating the products! I’m always passionate about creating new products for Pixi each season –that’s what I wake up every morning to do and I feel this collection is one of my best!
BC: Which Disney characters would you like to re-imagine for (possible) future collaborations?
PS: Wow, I have not thought about that. I’m still living in Tinker Bell’s world!
BC: Who would you most like to create a line for and why?
PS: I would love to do a kit for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (AKA Kate Middleton), the future queen of England. She embodies a classic English rose in every way.
BC: How do you want women to feel when they use these products?
PS: My aim is always to give women confidence, and I do it through creating products that actually work in real life – multipurpose products that are uncomplicated to use in foolproof colors.
“You but better” is my mantra – with PixiGlow the mantra is: “you but better” – and a touch of magic!
BC: What new projects should we keep an eye out for in the future?
PS: In addition to the PixiGlow collection, I’ll be launching my new Pixi spring collection at Target this March. You can also check out my new blog where I share my monthly musings on inspirations and my ideas of all things beautiful.
