Phillip Phillips Is Your New ‘American Idol’: His 10 Best Performances
In honor of Phillip Phillips’ ‘American Idol’ win, here are his 10 best performances, from “Superstition” to “Home.” Oh, and congrats to newly-engaged couple Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, too!
Last night, the 11th season of American Idol (good golly, has the show really been on for that long?) came to a close—and your new American Idol is… drum roll, please…. Phillip Phillips! It was a close match between him and Jessica Sanchez throughout the entire season, but the 21-year-old Georgia native eventually took the crown with a record 132 million votes. In honor of the occasion, we’ve rounded up 10 of Phillip’s best performances on the show, from his first appearance all the way through his coronation song. Congratulations!
Oh, and while we’re at it, congratulations, too, to former Idols Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, who got engaged on the show last night. Proposing in a public place is always a dangerous move, but in this case, it certainly paid off.
Now, in the order in which the songs appeared on American Idol, on with the show!
1. “Superstition” Stevie Wonder
Phillip used “Superstition” as one of his two audition songs (the second being Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”), and wouldn’t you know it? The Top 13’s theme was Stevie Wonder. Good thing he had this little gem in his back pocket!
2. “Movin’ Out” by Billy Joel
This Top 10 performance is universally acknowledged as one of Phillip’s best. He just looks like he’s having so much fun, doesn’t he?
3. “Still Rainin’” by Jonny Lang
During the Top 9 “Personal Idols” performances, mentor Stevie Nicks was so impressed with Phillip’s rendition of “Still Rainin’” that she said Mick Fleetwood would have asked him to join Fleetwood Mac had he been around in 1975. High praise, indeed!
4. “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye
Elise Testone and Phillip teamed up on “Somebody That I Used to Know” in the Top 7—a performance which definitely became one of the highlights of this season of the show. And guess what? Rumor has it that Elise has requested it for the summer tour. Fingers crossed that we get to relive it then!
5. “The Stone” by Dave Matthews Band
What with all the Dave Matthews comparisons Phillip drew throughout the run of the show, it was inevitable that he’d perform a Dave Matthews Band number at some point. He did it in the Top 6—and it was definitely a good call.
More of Phillip’s best performances, including “Volcano” by Damien Rice and his first single, “Home,” up next!
