In an announcement that surprised no one, Jessica Simpson finally went public yesterday with the news that yes, she is, in fact, pregnant (and for the curious, yes, it’s fiancé Eric Johnson’s baby). Congrats to the happy couple! Now can we all stop obsessing about her physical state of being? Please? Thank you!

Jessica divulged the news via Twitter—again, unsurprising, though smart in terms of the speed required in disseminating such information—when she Tweeted this:

Of course, in retrospect, it’s interesting that she chose to debut her baby bump on that particular day. Maybe Jessica had always planned to announce her pregnancy through her form-fitting mummy costume on Halloween—the big reveal wasn’t too dissimilar from Beyonce’s VMA gambit—but even if she had, it ended up being an incredibly savvy move for a different reason: The announcement came at the same time that news broke of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ impending divorce.

Although apparently Jessica’s bulletin was enough to crash her website—according to TMZ, more than 1 million people tried to access it less than a minute after she made the announcement—the bigger piece of news right now is the collapse of a 72-day media circus of a marriage. In going public with the pregnancy when she did, Jessica pretty much ensured that the world would have something else to focus on—thus letting her off the hook in a way she hasn’t been for a very long time. Think of it as the sly “Oh, by the way, I’m pregnant, but HEY, LOOK AT THAT OVER THERE!” stratagem.

Anyway, according to People, Jessica has said before that she definitely wanted children with Eric Johnson, and I think she’ll be a good mum. So congrats, Jessica and Eric! And I hope the media gets off your backs now!
