Do you have a tendency to get a little sloppy when you drink? Yes? It’s okay; we’ve all been there. But I have another question for you: What would you do if I told you that scientists are developing a pill that would help out with that problem? Would you be super gung ho about it? Or would you wonder what the point of drinking without getting drunk would be?

That’s right: According to the Daily Mail, scientists are currently working on a “stay sober” pill. Taken before a night out, the pill would limit the effects of alcohol on your brain, thus saving you the embarrassment of scenes involving dancing on tables and beer goggles. Lab tests so far show positive results; when a bunch of mice were given the drug, then fed enough alcohol to have gotten them wasted out of their tiny mouse minds, the booze barely affected them at all.

Anyway, even though this could be a godsend for sloppy drunks everywhere, what’s a little unclear is whether or not the pill will do anything towards preventing alcohol poisoning. If it does, awesome; but if it doesn’t, the pill might be a little more problematic than at first it seems. Look at it this way: If the alcohol isn’t affecting your brain quite as much as it usually does, it could actually inspire the tendency to drink MORE—which would, in turn, flood your system with more booze, potentially leading to some serious cases of alcohol poisoning. We’ve all had those experiences where whatever we’ve been drinking didn’t taste like booze, so we didn’t quite notice how much it was actually affecting us, right? And then what happened later? Yep: Sick, sick, sick. It’s conceivably that the pill might actually exacerbate this problem even as it solves the other one.

But hey, isn’t science cool?
