Meet Your (Almost) New ‘X Factor’ Judge: Britney Spears
Word on the street is that Britney Spears could be our new X Factor judge. Thoughts on this, Bettys?
Looks like Britney’s getting back in the saddle: She’s engaged, she’s selling her house… and now she’s quite possibly going to be the new judge on Simon Cowell’s post-American Idol talent competition show, X Factor.
Wait, what? Seriously?
Yep: According to the Hollywood Reporter, as of last night the Princess of Pop is extremely close to making a deal with the show. Her fiancé, Jason Trawick, is negotiating the contract, which apparently could be signed as early next week. Although Simon Cowell wouldn’t confirm that he and Britney were in talks, he did note that “there’s going to be a lot of twists and turns over the next few weeks and a lot of things we’re going to announce.” How intriguing!
After last month’s huge shakeup—you know, the one that resulted in Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and Steve Jones all getting fired from the show—X Factor is badly in need of some new judges. Janet Jackson turned down the job roughly a week ago; but word on the street is that Brit Brit has been offered a cool $10 million to take it instead.
The Hollywood Reporter points out that Britney joining the show would bring “legitimacy as a successful recording artist,” which many critics of X Factor say was missing in the past season; though Paula Abdul is something of a legend, she hasn’t really made any new music since the early 2000s—and ten-plus years is a relatively long time by most standards—while Nicole Scherzinger… well, let’s just say that the Pussycat Dolls aren’t exactly the pinnacle of pop stardom. Part of me can’t help but feel that talent competition shows are where former stars go to die… but at the same time, maybe this will be good for Britney. It’s true—love her or hate her (I was never a huge fan, but whatever), she IS one of the most important recording artists of the past decade, and now that she seems to have worked through the worst of her substantial issues, she’s starting to come out on top again. And hey, a name as big as Britney’s is good for any show, X Factor included.
Simon Cowell said that he’s “flattered” Britney is interested in the judging gig. He went on to note, “I’m fascinated by [her.] The fact that she’s one of the most talked about—not just pop stars but people—in the world today, means that you’ve got this star power. This girl has resilience. I would think that if she’s managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, [X Factor would be] a walk in the park. I would be fascinated to hear what she has to say. She’s still hot, she’s still having hit records and she’s still controversial. There’s a reason for that.” He’s got a point; “Criminal” was really something else.
What do you think, Bettys? Is this a match made in heaven? Or is it a harbinger of doom, either for the world or for Britney’s career (or both)?
