Ladies of Comic Con

Guess what, Bettys? New York Comic Con was this past weekend, and we were lucky enough to attend! For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the concept, New York Comic Con is an annual gathering of all things and people nerd and pop culture. Sure, there are comic books, comic artists, and comic personalities—it is a comic convention, after all!—but there’s definitely way more than just comics to be had: Panels, screenings, and previews of awesome books, television shows, and movies abound. You may have heard of its West Coast counterpart, San Diego Comic Con, which is about twice the size of New York Comic Con; but New York Comic Con is still nothing to sneeze at!

But you know what the best part of the convention was? Meeting a huge range of spectacular women. Because comic conventions aren’t just for guys anymore—no ma’am. Loads of lady nerds hold their own amongst the boys. Want to meet some of them? Read on!

Shelby

Name: Shelby

From: Brooklyn, New York

What Brings You to Comic Con?: The desire to meet other people who create costumes, as well as the creators of her favorite web series, comics, and so on. Shelby, you see, is an archaeology student by day, but a spectacular costume designer by night. Naturally, she’s love to meet other people with whom to make awesome costumes (wanted: a Gabrielle to her Xena, Inquire within!). Shelby started watching Xena: Warrior Princess at the tender age of eight, and when she acquired her first store-bought Xena costume, she started tinkering around with it; now, she’s made a full-fledged set of Xena garb that’s way more impressive than anything you could find at a standard costume shop. She also makes gorgeous jewelry, by the way—check out her Etsy shop for lots of pretty things!

Kim

Name: Kim

From: Bergen County, New Jersey

What Brings You to Comic Con?: Kim, who is dressed as Malina from Mortal Kombat, is here with her best friend—they’re a costumed pair. Alas, her friend was nowhere to be seen; but Kim is pretty impressive all on her own, no? This year’s New York Comic Con is her very first con, and she’s here to see Kevin Smith and a preview of The Walking Dead, among many other bits of geeky gloriousness.

Debbie

Name: Debbie (pictured left)

From: Long Island, New York

What Brings You to Comic Con?: Debbie’s dedicated—she comes to Comic Con every year. She went to San Diego Comic Con once, but found it so large that it was difficult to navigate. She likes the size of New York Comic Con, though; it may be a little smaller, but it’s just that much more manageable. She goes in costume every year, too; this year, she came up with this fantastic Dalek costume from Doctor Who. Her favorite Doctor? David Tennant. We can understand why!

Ann and Jessica

Names: Ann (left) and Jessica (right)

From: Brooklyn and the Bronx, New York

What Brings You to Comic Con?: Ann is a veteran con-goer; this is her third con. It’s Jessica’s first, though, so it’s a good thing she’s got a buddy to show her the ropes! Both of them are big cosplayers—that is, they make costumes of their favorite characters , like Wonder Woman here, and present them at cons and such. Ann and Jessica are hoping to meet some new cosplay friends. Well, Comic Con is certainly a good place to do that!

More awesome ladies, including an artist and a steampunk enthusiast, up next!
