‘Mad Men’s’ Terrie V. Owen Tells All – About the Hairstyles, That Is!
Terrie V. Owen knows a thing or two when it comes to ‘Mad Men’ hairstyles–and she’s sharing her secrets with us!
Whether you love Mad Men or love to hate it, you’d be hard pressed to find fault with the cast’s impeccable appearances. From Joan’s sassy updos to intricate hair pieces a la Mrs. Don Draper, Terrie V. Owen has created looks women everywhere desire to emulate. This mane pro boasts decades of experience (she was the hair department head for Days of Our Lives) and a recent Emmy nod for her work on Mad Men as lead stylist.
We chatted with Owen about how to stay well-coiffed this summer, what it’s really like on the set of Mad Men, and her all-time favorite styles on the show. You’ll want to put that photo of Don Draper down for this one!
BettyConfidential: You’ve been working on hair for decades. What’s the most rewarding part?
Terrie V. Owen: I really love bringing a character to life visually from a script. I also love collaborating with actors, directors, costume designers, and makeup artists. It really does take a creative village!
BC: You’ve been nominated for a number of Emmys, including one in 2011 for your work on Mad Men. How have these characters’ hairstyles helped to develop the show?
TVO: Well, I believe a hairstyle can say a lot about a person like their social standing, or their marital status. For example, an unmarried gal might be more heavily coiffed than a busy stay at home mom. It can also reveal a character’s state of mind: When you feel bad you often look bad. Hair is an amazing visual for a character’s development.
