I’ve always loved taking personality quizzes — like the ones in my teen magazines “Are You Too Nice?” (no!) … “Who’s Your Ideal Guy?” (Johnny Depp!). And now of course thanks to the Internet you can find out not only your stress levels, work style and whether you’re a woman who does too much (is there any other type?), but which character you’d be on Mad Men (hmm … maybe the hot French wife?). The real question, of course, is whether any of these quizzes are anything more than just fun. Well, ladies, I can tell you for certain, the new online Simple Skin Health Consultation is the real deal — if you’re looking for some good, personalized advice about your sensitive skin.

Designed by Dr. Segal, the Simple Skincare dermatologist, the quiz is worth £4.99 in the UK (um, I think that’s a little less than $8 on this side of the pond), but it’s currently being offered as a complimentary consultation in the US, customized to America. Score! As one on of Simple’s US Ambassadors, I of course had to test it out, and I’m happy to report I was really impressed with everything from the super-simple format, to the types of questions asked and (most of all), the thorough, personalized advice you get at the end. In fact — that’s what impressed me the most: the way Simple approaches the concept of skincare. Great skin isn’t just about effective products (or even good genes); it’s also about your overall health and lifestyle.

For example, the quiz, which took less than 10 minutes (even though I have modern-life ADD and checked my email a couple of times and replied to a few work IMs while I was taking it!), starts of with questions like, “Have you experienced irritations from facial products (ie., makeup, cleansers, moisturizers, etc.)?” (yes!) and “Does your skin seem to change with the seasons?” (yes again!) and moves on to important things to take into consideration, like “Where do you spend most of your day?” (um… here in front of this laptop?) and “How often are you stressed?” (hahaha) and questions about your diet and how much water you drink (er, does taking a big swig right now count?).

The questions aren’t difficult to answer — they’re very simple and straightforward, but even as I took the quiz, I started to get a picture in my mind of how my LIFE is affecting my skin.

At the end of the quiz, I entered in my name and email address so they could send me a PDF with my personalized consultation, and they also gave me the option to click to the next screen to see my results there. Instant gratification plus a hard copy to keep! I like it.

My results were really smart and helpful. There were some good, general product-based tips, like:

- Avoid washing with harsh cleansing products. Harsh cleansing ingredients like soap will strip moisture from the skin and cause dryness.

And then advice that focused on both products and lifestyle, for example, their tips for me to “bring back your sparkle and create a more radiant complexion” as the seasons change included product reccos both specific and general:

- Apply a moisturizer with SPF, such as Simple Skincare Vital Vitamin Day Cream with SPF; during the winter, use a rich moisturizing cream to nourish the skin and everywhere that is not covered by clothing, concentrating on your face, neck and hands.

AND a great piece of lifestyle advice:

- Just getting outside for as little as 15 minutes a day can make a real difference when it comes to oxygenating your skin.

They also addressed stress:

- To help reduce your stress levels, make sure that you make time each day to stop, relax and unwind or have a night off to pamper yourself with a face mask, a relaxing bath and an early night.

And even exercise:

- When you exercise, your body releases endorphins into your bloodstream, which make you feel great and look it too! Physical tiredness will help you to sleep more soundly and when you wake you will look and feel refreshed.

I mean, really, that is all such great advice, and when it’s coming from a skincare company, you know that their goal is to help you achieve your best possible skin, not just to sell their products.

In fact, at the end of my consultation, they only recommended three Simple Skincare facial skincare products products based on my answers:

Simple Skincare Refreshing Facial Wash Gel: “It doesn’t contain soap which can dry out your skin and the added Pro-Vitamin B5 will leave your skin thoroughly cleansed, refreshed and revived.”

Simple Skincare Hydrating Light Moisturizer: “Your skin will feel hydrated and nourished all day long. Its perfect blend of our purest possible skin loving ingredients and vitamins will leave your skin soft and smooth.”

Simple Skincare Soothing Eye Balm: “With its perfect blend of our purest possible skin loving ingredients and added vitamins, it will soothe, calm and replenish your dry eye area.”

All those products together only cost $29.91!

And the advice. Priceless. (I’m drinking more water now as I type this, honest!)

I highly recommend checking out the free service at Simple Skin Health Consultation for yourself (with a glass of water at your side).
