Ah, Groundhog Day: Not just an awesome Bill Murray movie, it’s the day where a tiny furry creature tells us if we’re going to get an early spring based on whether or not he sees his shadow. While the appearance of his shadow (or lack thereof) may not matter to the inhabitants of warmer climes, those of us who live in places known for their cold and unforgiving winters usually either celebrate or mourn, depending on the verdict. And speaking of verdicts, as of 7:30am EST this morning, we’ve got one: Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow.

Well, drat. Six more weeks of winter it is.

Of course, that wack-o October blizzard aside, this winter has been surprisingly mild (or at least, it has been in New York), so maybe it won’t be so bad. And hey, for what it’s worth, Wiarton Willie, Canada’s equivalent of Phil, didn't see his shadow today, so maybe we’ll end up with an early spring anyway. Either that, or the two will cancel each other out and we’ll have the most average winter on record.

The Scots, meanwhile, merely think we’re weird.
