Babyonce has arrived—and it’s a girl! Congrats, Beyonce and Jay-Z!
After a long and incredibly public pregnancy, maybe we can finally put the whole “Is Beyonce faking her pregnancy?” question to rest: According to the NY Daily News, The singer gave birth to her and Jay-Z’s baby on Saturday night in a private wing of New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital. E! News gave a few more details, noting that the baby arrived via scheduled C-section—as well as the little girl’s name: Ivy Blue. Beyonce confirmed it herself, Tweeting first:

For the overly-curious, the Daily News has some surprisingly specific information about what went down at the hospital. Beyonce apparently checked in the Upper East Side hospital on Friday night under the name “Ingrid Jackson,” and rumor has it that Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) rented out the hospital’s entire fourth floor for $1.3 million. By Saturday night, the wing was heavily guarded, and though doctors and nurses were barred from entering it (and yes, many of the doctors were disgruntled about it), “people were seen bringing bags of takeout and a dozen bottles of red wine” in. The hospital even went so far as to put tape over the lenses of security cameras and to force employees to hand over their cell phones when arriving for shifts. Undoubtedly the lengths gone to in order to ensure Beyonce privacy while she gave birth will continue to fan the flames of the fake pregnancy rumors; but think about it for a minute. Would you want to give birth knowing that pictures of the whole event would be greedily snapped up by the world? Yeah, me neither.
But here’s the big question: What’s with the baby’s name? Celebs do have a tendency to give their children unusual names, so where did “Blue Ivy” come from? People has amassed a number of theories: Over the holidays, the parents to be allegedly sent their friends blue Christmas gifts, perhaps as a way to give a hint of their impending bundle of joy’s name; furthermore, fans are suggesting that “Ivy” has something to do with the number 4—or Roman numeral IV—which has been “significant” in Beyonce and Jay-Z’s relationship (Beyonce’s birthday is September 4; Jay-Z’s is December 4; they got married on April 4; Beyonce’s latest album was called 4; etc.). As for “Blue?” Maybe it has something to do with Jay-Z’s obsession with the word “blueprint” (three of his albums have the word in their titles). I kind of just want to know whether they’re planning on referring to their daughter as “Blue” or as “Ivy”; but hey, maybe if we’re lucky, they’ll let us know how and why they chose the name soon.
In the meantime, congratulations once again to the happy family!
