How to Spring Clean Your Skincare and Beauty Routine
Out with the old and in with the new — your skincare and beauty routine is one of the first places you should start your spring cleaning!

Spring has sprung! And although it’s been a little gloomy here on the East coast, the flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the gray weight of winter is finally lifting. Yippee! Now that we’re finally able to open the windows and let some fresh air in, I’m tempted to create a bonfire out of my winter coat and boots — but I’ll resist. Instead, I’m digging out shorts and bathing suits, pondering pedicures, and finding myself with a mysterious urge to banish clutter and dust to make way for sunshine and cleanliness in every corner of my home. Out with the old and in with the new! And that motto doesn’t stop at your bathroom door — in fact, your skincare and beauty routine is one of the first places you should start your spring cleaning!
It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3! Here’s how:
1. Toss! Go through all your skincare and beauty products and CULL. That’s right. Old, expired makeup gets tossed heartlessly in the garbage. “When in doubt, throw it out!” — that’s what my mama always says.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends these make-up products be tossed when they reach their life spans: Powders and shadows: two years; Foundation: one year; Lipstick; one year; Mascara: three months.
Also, foundation sponges and makeup brushes should be washed or changed regularly. Remember, bacteria is NOT a friend to your beautiful complexion, so choose products that are kind to skin and still within their expiration date.
2. Replace! This is the fun part, where you get to splurge on some new makeup in spring colors and some new skincare products, if you had to throw any out or if you need something lighter for the warmer months. Obviously, I’m a big fan of the Simple Skincare line when it comes to super affordable and really great products for sensitive skin. You also need some good sunscreen — The American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays) and Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or greater. EVERY DAY, GIRL.
If you don’t have sunscreen handy, try using products that offer sun protection. Some makeup products and moisturizers do, such as Simple Skincare Vital Vitamin Day Cream with SPF 15, which moisturizes and protects skin all day.
3. Revamp your skincare routine. Great skin starts with clean skin, and not cleansing properly (and using old yucky products) is a major culprit in less than peachy skin. I recommend finding cleansers for sensitive skin. I also like to exfoliate once or twice a week — my preference is a very mild and light fruit acid peel, but you might like something else. The important thing is to keep old dead and dry skin off so supple, radiant skin can have its day. Also , now that we’re free of the drying, harsh combo of winter weather + indoor hearing (halleluiah!), you probably would do well with a lighter moisturizer.
Finally — buy yourself a bouquet of spring flowers, you pretty girl, you! You deserve it.
