When the world heard about Chris Brown attacking his then-girlfriend Rihanna, everyone went into shock. A man brutalizing a woman seems to fit more in a bad TV movie than in real life. If you’ve been watching the news lately, it seems as if violent acts against women are on the rise. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in every four women will have a brush with domestic violence in her lifetime. Almost 1.3 million women are abused in a year; more than likely by their partner. Women between the ages of 20-24 are at the greatest risk of being attacked by their partner.

“That means most of us-– while grocery shopping, at work or at home– come across several women a day who have either been abused, or are currently enduring abuse,” says Linda O’Dochartaigh, a health professional and author of Peregrine. “It’s a terrible fact of life for too many women, but if there is something we can do about it and we care about fellow human beings, then we must try.”
