How to Protect Your Hair Against Sun Damage
You know how to protect your skin against sun damage, but what about your hair?
We’re all doing the happy dance now that spring is here and summer’s just around the corner. How quickly we forget how the sun can cause frizzies, dry, damaged hair and worse. Ick. To make sure our locks are lovely (and continue to stay lovely), we checked in with celebrity hairstylist Janine Jarmon, owner of Hairroin in Hollywood on what to do this season.
Here are her three tips:
1. Apply aerosol sunscreen on your hair before going out. Look for hair styling products such as hair sprays that contain UVA/UVB sunscreen to help shield your locks from sun exposure
Three to try:
Ojon Color Sustain gloss finishing hair spray ($23.50, ojon.com). Lightweight finishing spray that also contains pure Ojon oil and Tahitian Monoi to keep hair soft and shiny.
Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking spray ($13, use their online salon locator for a salon near you ) The hair spray also has protectants to prevent colored hair from fading.
TRESemme Climate Control Climate Protection finishing spray ($4.99, drugstore.com)
2. Sunny days are a great excuse to wear cute hats and scarves, plus they protect your hair from the sun’s rays. So go ahead and splurge on that new hat you’ve been eyeing – it’s for a good cause!
Three to play with:
Gem floppy hat ($14.97, charmingcharlie.com)
Kangol K0953FA Wheat Trilby ($54, kangolstore.com)
Stetson Madrid straw Western hat ($45, villagehatshop.com)
3. Wet hair with fresh water or use a leave-in conditioner such before swimming and sunning to create a barrier.
Three to try:
Sebastian Professionals Potion 9 Lite ($15.67, stockngo.com). Lightweight leave-in conditioner can be used every day.
L’Oreal Paris Evercreme Sulfate-Free Moisture System Camelina Nourishing Leave-In spray ($8.99, cvs.com). Made with natural botanicals and natural Omega 3+ 6, this product infuses your hair with shine and moisture.
L’Occitane Citrus Verbena daily use conditioner ($18, us.loccitane.com). Works well with fine hair as well as thick! The daily conditioner leaves hair smelling fresh, clean with a subtle hint of lemon. It restores shine and keeps your locks moisturized.
