“Guess What? We’re Married!” 10 Surprise Celebrity Weddings
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan aren’t the first celebs to have gotten married on the down low!
Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg surprised us all a couple of weeks ago not by taking his company public—but by quietly tying the knot in a surprise wedding ceremony with his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan. These two are far from the first celebrities to wed in secret, though; indeed, surprise celebrity weddings have become increasingly common in famous couples looking to keep their relationships on the down low. There’s something we love about these surprise weddings, too: In contrast with, say, Kim Kardashian’s gigantic circus of a television spectacle, celebs who just go off for a weekend and then come back quietly married seem more like average, everyday people.
So, here we offer you 10 notable surprise celebrity weddings. Obviously this is by no means an all-inclusive list; add your favorite surprise celeb weddings in the comments!
1. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz kept their relationship so far under the radar that most of us didn’t even know they were dating when they came back from a weekend in June last summer suddenly married. Daniel had previously been married to Scottish actress Fiona Loudon in the early ‘90s, while Rachel had a nine-year relationship with film director Darren Aronofsky; accordingly, their ceremony was so small that it consisted of only four people: Daniel’s daughter, Rachel’s son, and two of their friends as witnesses. Shhh! It’s a secret!
2. Rikki Lake and Christian Evans
Talk show host extraordinaire Rikki Lake eloped with her boyfriend, normal guy Christna Evans, in secret one weekend in April, leaving the big reveal for the following week. The Southern California ceremony was small and secret—but boy was her dress a stunner or what?
3. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied
Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied definitely win the prize for Tightest Security Detail Surrounding a Relationship. We were never really sure when they started dating… we continued to be unsure when they got engaged…. and we’re still not totally positive that they did get married in February. We’re taking the jeweler’s word about their rings as confirmation, but the jury may still be out on this one. Who knew it was possible to be THIS secretive about your maybe-possibly marriage?
