Sad news today: Glee actress and singer Charice Pempengco’s father was killed late Monday in her hometown, just south of Manila in the Philippines.

According to the Associated Press, Ricky Pempengco, a 40-year-old construction worker, accidentally brushed up against a drunk man at a small grocery store in San Pedro township. This angered the man, who then stabbed Mr. Pempengco with an ice pick in the back and chest before fleeing the scene of the crime. The Laguna province police chief, Senior Supt. Gilbert Cruz, said that the killing appeared to be random; a manhunt has since been launched for the suspect, with a 20,000 peso ($470) award for information leading to his arrest.

19-year-old Charice, who plays foreign exchange student Sunshine Corazon on Glee, and her father were estranged; her parents split when she was three due to fights caused by her father’s drug abuse. But in spite of that fact, Charice posted the following statement on Twitter:

Most of it, as you can see, appears to be written in Tagalog; but, as she says, “I loved him and I will still love him. He’s still my Dad after all.” As such, she has pulled out of a concert she was due to perform in Singapore on Tuesday so she could travel home to the Philippines to be with her family. We offer our condolences to Charice and her family during this difficult time.
