First Look: Angelina Jolie Is Appropriately Terrifying as ‘Maleficent’ [UPDATED]
Production on ‘Sleeping Beauty’ retelling ‘Maleficent’ continues apace—and here’s your first look at Angelina Jolie as everyone’s favorite villainess!
We’re all super excited about the upcoming live-action version of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty as retold from Maleficent’s point of view, right? Especially when we’ve got Angelina Jolie to look forward to as the title character? I mean, what’s not to love? It’s going to be terrifying and amazing and all sorts of other adjectives that have yet to be invented. Yeah. It’s going to be that cool. And hey, look! Here’s your first peek at Angie as the Mistress of All Evil in Maleficent! The image above has been cropped; check out the full-sized pic here:
Maleficent’s trademark silhouette, of course, includes those badass horns. But we’ve never really known what they’re actually made of—until now. As noted by Entertainment Weekly, this Maleficent’s horns look less like bone and more like a style choice—“kind of like the world’s most terrifying turban” with straps of leather winding around her head. Creepy? We think so.
It’s also fairly faithful to Maleficent’s original look in the 1959 animated classic. Just in case you somehow forgot (though we’ll admit that we’re not really sure how you could—Maleficent has been burned into our childhood memories as one of the most frightening villains of all time), here’s how she looked then:
According to Angie, this version of Maleficent will be simultaneously sympathetic and straight-up villainous. She told EW, “It’s not anti-princess, but it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman…. I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities. You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is.” Sounds neat!
Sadly, Maleficent is still a long way off; it’s not due for release until March 14, 2014 (Yep: 2014, not 2013). Ouch. But just think how awesome it’ll be when it finally gets here! Directed by Robert Stromberg, a visual effects supervisor with a resume as long as your arm, the film will also star Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager’s India Eisley as Young Maleficent.
Who else can’t wait to see what she’ll look like when she’s a dragon?
UPDATE: An on-set photo has surfaced!
Okay, so she’s a little less impressive with a recycling bin, a plastic bag, and a couple of trucks in the background, but still. She could kill you with her pinky. Just sayin’.
