Expert Advice: Bust Belly Fat With Whole Grains
Diet experts say whole grains can trim your tummy.
At last, some really expert advice on getting rid of your belly fat.
A study conducted by scientists at Tufts University found that people who ate three or more servings of whole grain every day, and limited their refined-grain consumption to less than one serving per day, had 10 percent less belly fat than people who did not follow that diet.
What’s more, the results were the same even when the researchers adjusted their findings for factors like smoking, exercise, alcohol consumption and eating fruits and vegetables.
One example of a whole-grain serving would be a slice of whole-wheat bread or a half-cup of whole-grain oatmeal. On the on the other hand, a serving of a refined grain would be a cup of white rice or a slice of white bread. But scientist Nicola McKeown emphasized that merely adding whole grains won’t give you the belly-fat benefit; you have to remove refined grains from your diet. Nutritionists have long touted the benefits of whole grains; in addition to controlling weight, they’ve been found to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
And there are substantive reasons for getting rid of belly fat (besides looking good in a bikini): fat that’s accumulated on your tummy has been linked with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes.
Bonus Betty Tip: When shopping for whole-grain foods, make sure the label says whole-grain rather than multi-grain. (msnbc)
