Exclusive! Q&A With Macy Gray
The award-winning singer opens up about the downfalls of today’s music, love, Lady Gaga, and her crush on Javier Bardem.

Macy Gray opens her mouth and a humbling display of truths come spilling out. She is who she is — and wants you to be who you are too.
The 42-year-old has five Grammys under her belt and is about to drop her fifth studio album entitled, The Sellout (June 22), which is according to Macy, “my tightest record so far.” While the music of today may have morphed into an “industry of cool,” (as Lester Bangs so aptly referred to it in Almost Famous), Macy can’t help but sing the songs that keep her a few feet outside the crowd in a category all her own.
The singer may be a lot of things. She’s honest and quirky—however, Macy is anything but a sellout.
Why is your album titled The Sellout?
When I started to make the album I thought maybe I should try a commercial pop album. I set out to conform, but I failed at conformity. I couldn’t do it.
So, is conformity the main theme of the album?
It’s definitely a concept record. I talk about my career a lot. It’s probably, lyrically, the tightest record I’ve done so far.
How has your music evolved since your first album On How Life Is came out in 1999?
I’m a better singer. I still do what I did on the first album I just know what I’m doing now. I have a flow.
