Neil Patrick Harris Tony Awards

Didn’t catch the Tony Awards last night? No worries! As always, we watch the awards so you don’t have to! The Tonys are always great fun to watch, largely because they’re so meta: A live awards show celebrating live theatre naturally leads to all sorts of live shenanigans. The best part, though? Definitely the musical numbers. Broadway was in fine form this year with a whole slew of new musicals as well as outstanding revivals, and with Neil Patrick Harris as your host… well, let’s just say there’s no way you can go wrong.

So! Here’s your Monday morning Broadway playlist, courtesy of the Tony Awards. Get ready to sing and dance your way to the top with all of the evening’s fabulous performances!

Catch the complete list of winners, including all the awards for regular ol’ non-musical plays, here!

1. The Cast of The Book of Mormon Introduces Neil Patrick Harris

The Tony Awards always have a dynamite opening song-and-dance number, but this year, we got a nifty little pre-opening number as well, brought to you by the cast of The Book of Mormon and a whole bunch of hilarious celebrity cameos. We can’t think of a better way to introduce this year’s Master of Ceremonies, the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris!

2. Neil Patrick Harris’ Opening Number

NPH is kind of like the Billy Crystal of the Tony Awards: He keeps hosting them time and time again, because he’s AWESOME at it. Case in point: This year’s opening number, “What If Life Were Like Theatre?”. Poking fun at all the wacky conventions that are just sort of accepted without question in the theatre—your apartment disappearing from view without notice thanks to some mysterious people dressed in black, 7-second costume changes, intermission, and so on—it kicks the show off on just the right note.

And now onto this year’s original musicals!

3. Newsies

Newsies and Once were the big contenders for most of the musical awards this year, and though Once swept most of the categories, it’s still pretty impressive that Newsies made it this far. A movie that flopped in the cinemas in the ‘90s, it somehow defied all odds, developed a cult following, and eventually got its very own stage show—which wasn’t even intended for a Broadway run in the first place. You can probably see from this clip of “Seize the Day” why it took the award for Best Choreography, though!
