I’ve long been leery of cream blushes: One wrong swipe and you end up looking clownish instead of chic. So when I got Smashbox’s Be Discovered Cream Cheek Trio ($29, smashbox.com) I circled around it for a bit before I dove in for a test drive.

The trio has a blush, highlighter and bronzer. Of course the first time I tried the blush, I ended up with a huge orange swipe on my face. Sooooo not a look! Imagine my surprise, then, when I attempted to blend (read: erase) it on my face… and it actually behaved! A few quick strokes with my fingers and the color toned down, becoming incredibly wearable. Instead of hot coral “grandma cheeks,” I had a modern, subtle, healthy glow.

The cream blush, as I learned the hard way, is buildable and easy to manipulate. I’ll occasionally add a touch of bronzer on my forehead and cheeks for a bit of that sun-kissed look if I’ve had a long night. It perks up your complexion nicely. While I haven’t gone crazy experimenting with the highlighter, if I’m going for “oh, no. that’s not makeup, that’s just me” look, I’ll replace my blush with the highlighter,.

I’m also impressed with its staying power. I can apply it in the morning and just forget about it. I never have to re-apply!

I’ve used a brush and my fingers to work it on my cheekbones. Either way, you’ll end up with color that looks natural, not fake. It also comes in Showbiz; a rose-toned trio.
