Ashton Kutcher

Well, this is interesting: According to Variety, Ashton Kutcher is currently attached to play Apple genius Steve Jobs in the upcoming indie biopic Jobs.

Did your brain just explode a little bit? Because mine sure did.

Anytime a major game changer or innovator passes away, everyone immediately jumps on the biopic bandwagon, and Steve Jobs’ passing in October is no exception. Jobs, which will be directed by Swing Vote’s Joshua Michael Stern and written by Matt Whiteley, will track Jobs from his beginnings as a “wayward hippie” (says Variety, at least) all the through his time as co-founder of Apple. It’s scheduled to start production in May while Ashton is on hiatus from Two and a Half Men.

My take on it? I often feel rather conflicted about Ashton (which is probably why I’m not wild about the idea of sending him to space). He does extremely stupid things sometimes (see: the Great Sandusky Tweet of 2011) Punk’d never really quite did it for me, and he’s never struck me as that astonishing an actor. However, he also originally planned to study biochemical engineering in college and he’s proven himself to have one helluva head for business, so clearly he’s not as stupid as he sometimes looks. Even so, when you think “Steve Jobs,” do you immediately follow it up with “Ashton Kutcher?” Yeah, me neither.

Maybe I’m a little biased—right now, I’m not too fond of him because of that whole allegedly-having-cheated-on-his-wife thing—but I’m not totally convinced that Ashton has the acting chops to pull it off. Then again, though he’s probably most known for fluff flicks like New Year’s Eve and No Strings Attached, he’s also gotten some pretty strong praise for his work in films like Spread and the historical drama Bobby (which, admittedly, I haven’t seen). Maybe he’s got depths that I haven’t hitherto witnessed.

He does LOOK the part, at least; check out these two images via the Hollywood Reporter of Ashton side by side with a young Steve:

Kind of eerie, right? I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out…

Tell us: Do you think Ashton will be able to pull of playing Steve Jobs?
