And The Oscar Goes To…: The 12 Best Moments of the 2012 Oscars (Plus One More)

We watch the Oscars so you don’t have to! Here are the 12 best moments from this year’s show. Also, find out whatever ended up happening with that whole Sacha Baron Cohen/Oscars/The Dictator situation.

Billy Crystal

Well, Bettys, with the presentation of the Oscars last night, awards season is finally wrapping up. True, we’ve still got the Razzies to look forward to in April; but the Oscars are the holy grail of American cinema awards, and so here we are, at the end of the road. Happy? Sad? Mixed? Well, whatever your feelings, we watch the Oscars so you don’t have to. Miss the show? Catch up on the best moments here! From Billy Crystal’s opening schtick to Cirque du Soleil’s somewhat polarizing performance, we’ve got it all here, plus a bonus moment from the red carpet concerning Sacha Baron Cohen and that whole Oscars vs. The Dictator controversy. Read on for more!

1. The Opening

Inserting Billy Crystal into other movies is never a bad idea. And let me just say that the transition between the section from The Help into Bridesmaids was GENIUS. Though Billy Crystal as Tintin was a little bizarre-looking. But that’s okay.

2. The 59 Year Seat Filler Anniversary

Seat Filler

See that happy-looking little old man in the powder blue suit sitting in the front row? His name is Carl, and he’s been a seat filler at the Academy Awards for 59 years. This means that when celebs temporarily vacate their seats to go present or perform or whatever, Carl steps in and fills their seats until they can get back. The first show he did it at was in 1952, when The Greatest Show On Earth won Best Picture. At this particular moment (when he was introduced to the world by none other than Tom Hanks), he was sitting in for JLo, and he looks charming. I want him to be my adoptive grandfather. Don’t you?

Speaking of JLo…

3. Jennifer Lopez’s Wardrobe Malfunction

Ladies and gentlemen, take a good look at JLo. Make sure you’re properly taking in her dress. Make sure, also, that you are focusing on a very particular area of her dress. That very deep v-neck, to be precise. Is that… what it looks like? The answer is yes. Yes it is (despite what her stylist may say). Say hello, Jennifer Lopez’s nip slip! You’re on live television!

4. Octavia Spencer’s Standing Ovation

‘Nuff said.

5. The Focus Group for The Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz focus group

Yes, it was a joke joke. But like Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest is always a good idea, and this clip of “archived footage” from a focus group for The Wizard of Oz proves it. Best sketch of the night? I think so! The video isn’t embeddable (alas), but click through to see it here!

6. Cirque du Soleil?

Frankly, I would have rather seen the Best Original Song nominees perform (Man or Muppet! Man or Muppet!), but no one interprets “Going to the Movies” as a concept quite like Cirque du Soleil. Does anyone else feel like this might have been a particularly bad nightmare instead of a really exciting dream, though? I would also like to note that George Clooney’s reaction to it was the best thing ever (George Clooney reaction shots make everything better). Short clip above; click through to see the whole thing.

More great Oscar moments, including Robert Downey, Jr. and the cast of Bridesmaids, up next!
