And the Next Honoree for the Annual Friars Club Roast Is… Betty White!
Guess who’s getting roasted by the Friars Club this year? Betty White! Sound the trumpets and start the parade!
This piece of news should surprise absolutely no one: You know that whole Friars Club Roast thing that happens every May? Where that ancient and most venerable association of comedians and other celebrities known as the Friars Club singles out one of their own for an epic event that is simultaneously a celebration and a lambast? Well, this year’s lucky honoree is none other than Betty White. Go, Betty!
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Betty has said about the event, “Those Friars may think I’m an easy mark, but I have 90 years of comebacks waiting for them.” An easy mark? Betty White? Never! “This is such an honor to be roasted by the Friars Club,” she continued. “It will be an afternoon filled with dirty words, risqué jokes, and sex talk… and that’s just what I plan on saying!”
Oh, Betty. Never change.
This year’s roast will take place on May 16, so mark your calendars. Honorees from recent years past include Hugh Hefner in 2001, Chevy Chase in 2002, Jerry Lewis in 2006, and Quentin Tarantino in 2010—though of course this list is far from all-inclusive, given that the Friars Club has been roasting people since 1950. No word on who the Roastmaster will be yet, but hopefully we’ll get news of it soon.
Said comedian Freddie Roman, who is the Friars Club’s illustrious dean, “Betty White is one of those unique talents that comes along once every generation. She has been making people laugh all her life, and our Roasters will need to be on their toes to handle Betty’s razor sharp whit.” Darn right they will!
Happy roasting, Betty!
