The second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy has claimed another tribute!

Lionsgate announced yesterday that Amanda Plummer will be taking on the role of Wiress in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. A female tribute from District 3—that’s the one that specializes in the production of electronics for the nation of Panem—Wiress is slightly off her rocker (but given the state of the world, we can’t really blame her). She also doesn’t talk much… but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t communicate. In fact, she’s rather important indeed, and the uniqueness of how her brain works is a big part of it.

The daughter of famed stage and screen actor Christopher Plummer, aka Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Amanda is best known for her roles in Pulp Fiction and The Fisher King. She’s also a three time Tony Award nominee for her stage work; she won the Best Featured Actress award in 1982 for Agnes of God. I don’t know about you, Bettys, but I can’t think of an actress better equipped for Wiress.

If you’re a fan of the books, you’ll also recall that Wiress is one half of an eccentric pair the other tributes refer to as Nuts and Volts: Wiress is Nuts, while Beetee, her fellow District 3 tribute, is Volts (though I won’t tell you why, just in case you haven’t read the book). Rumor has it that Monk’s Tony Shalhoub is the frontrunner for Beetee, but we’ll just have to wait and see…

Amanda joins Philip Seymour Hoffman as one of the first new cast members to come aboard for The Hunger Games’ sequel; Jena Malone has also reportedly been offered the role of Johanna Mason, though no word yet on whether she’s accepted it. Catching Fire is due to start shooting this fall, with a planned release date of November 22, 2013.
