Wait, what? Twilight? Musical? A TWILIGHT MUSICAL IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING?
Yes. Yes it is. But relax, everyone—it’s a parody (thank goodness!). If you’re like me and think that the only way to see a Twilight movie is with a bunch of snarky friends and a heavily spiked soda, then odds are you’re going to agree with me that this has the potential to be terrifically funny. According to Playbill, Twilight: The Musical will perform in concert form (that’s kind of like a staged reading for musicals—not a full-blown production, but still definitely worth seeing) for one night only on January 16 at New York’s New World Stages. Awesome? I think so.
The show’s website describes the musical as follows:
“Twilight: The Musical is a parody of the Twilight saga in the vein of Urinetown and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Twilight: The Musical examines our culture of obsession through the story of teenage outsider Bella Swan who risks everything when she embarks on a star-crossed romance with Vampire Edward Cullen.”
Created by Ashley Griffin, it features music and lyrics by Jeremy Ezell, Sean Mahoney, David Mallamud, Michael Sutherland, and Griffin herself. It’s also got a cast featuring a bevy of Broadway regulars like Meghann Fahy (the original Natalie in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal)—as well as Lauren Lopez, who you may remember as the hilariously over-the-top Draco Malfoy in A Very Potter Musical.

Haven’t seen A Very Potter Musical yet? Shame on you, but I’ll take pity on you anyway. A musical parody of Harry Potter, A Very Potter Musical and its sequel (called—yes—A Very Potter Sequel) was a student production written and performed at the University of Michigan in 2009; it later became a YouTube hit, thanks in part to future Glee star Darren Criss’s performance as Harry. Twilight: The Musical sounds like it might have a little in common with A Very Potter Musical; in fact, according to the cast list, Hogwarts favorites Harry and Hermione will be making an appearance in Forks. Iiiiiiiinteresting! Lauren Lopez, by the way, will be playing Alice Cullen.
Proceeds from Twilight: The Musical will benefit Blessings in a Backpack, a program that works towards feeding elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program, but have little to no food on the weekends. An evening of hilarity in honor of an excellent cause? Sounds great to me!
And because it’s Thursday, here’s the first part of A Very Potter Musical. You’re welcome.
