The bachelor, transporting four passengers from Samoa to Melbourne, was unable to land at Norfolk Island Wednesday night to refuel due to horrible weather conditions. Following four failed attempts, he opted to land in the ocean.
James, his co-pilot and the passengers managed to get out of the plane before it sank in three minutes. The group stayed afloat for 90 minutes in the shark infested waters until help arrived.
“Full credit to the pilot ... the aircraft sank fairly rapidly and he pulled (them) together," Norfolk Island airport managers Glenn Robinson told Melbourne’s Radio 3AW. "It was just an amazing effort by him." (The New York Daily News)
