Susan Boyle has a crush. And it is on Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan. "I think he's gorgeous," she said in a recent interview.
And it isn't true that Susan has "never been kissed." The instant celebrity who wowed the world with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" has been kissed many times, said her neighbor Brian Smith.
Brian, 51, has known Susan for many years. He said, "I've given her many a peck on the cheek to say, 'Don't worry, everything's going to be all right.' She comes to me when she needs help or a shoulder to cry on. She's been through difficult and very low times in the past few years. She's a lovely lady, really kind and generous. She would make a great catch for any man."
Susan cared for her mother, who died at the age of 91, for years after her eight brothers and sisters left home. "I never knew her to have a birthday party because she was busy caring for her mother," Brian said. "When she was left alone in that house, she went through extremely down times. She wouldn't come out for three or four days or answer the door or phone."
About the lack of romance in her life, Susan told the London Daily Mirror, "My parents didn't want me to have boyfriends so I've never been on a date. I've had crushes, but I've never been in love. I suppose I've accepted it's never going to happen. The only thing I really do regret is not having children. I love kids and would have liked to have been a mum."
But she admits her current fancy is Morgan, a former newspaper editor. "I like his face...I think he's gorgeous...I was too embarrassed to tell him how I felt when I was at my audition, but I had my hair curled especially for the show and wore a dress I'd bought a few months back for my nephew's wedding.
"I like Simon Cowell, too. He is beautiful, but he's the boss. I've got too much respect for him to have feelings like that."
Susan continues to be at the center of worldwide attention. Oprah Winfrey has invited her to appear on her show. And the singer Elaine Paige, whom Susan said she admired, has suggested that they mght record a duet. Even Rosie O'Donnell has joined the Susan Boyle hoopla: "Simon Cowell was genuinely moved when he heard Susan Boyle sing," O'Donnell told People magazine Saturday night at a Florida showcase of her artwork. "He showed his humanity, and I actually liked him. It was a moment in time."
So far, Susan seems to be handling the attention with the help of her family and a publicist from Britain's Got Talent. She's even beginning to sound a lot more like a pro, which some might find a bit disappointing. "I've been to a meeting with Sony BMG, but I can't say much about it,"she confided. "It's early days."
She will sing again for Piers Morgan, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden on the show on May 23. Can you imagine the pressure on her? For there is no doubt the whole world will be watching.
