The National Enquirer is reporting that Elizabeth Edwards, 60, has been telling friends that she and John Edwards got in a violent physical altercation around the Christmas holidays. The incident was the final straw for Elizabeth, and is the reason she is filing for divorce to end their 32-year marriage.

Friends of Elizabeth's claim she's been telling them the shocking details of how John "beat" her and how cops were called to their house around midnight over the holidays. The National Enquirer says these friends have passed lie detector tests when relaying details of the story.

"John lost his temper big-time," one of the sources said. "[Elizabeth] has the divorce papers drawn up, but she can amend them to charge John with domestic violence. She's holding that over his head right now - and he's scared. Elizabeth is in control."

When the National Enquirer contacted John to comment, he didn't respond. But the magazine was quick to remind readers that two stories they had previously run about John Edwards (his cheating and his love child) turned out to be true. (National Enquirer)
