Jaycee Lee Dugard will testify against her accused kidnappers, Phillip and Nancy Garrido, if the case goes to trial, the Dugard family lawyer said at a press conference on Thursday.

Although attorney Scott McGregor admitted that he had no idea when a trial would be set for the Garridos, who both pleaded not guilty to charges relating to Jaycee’s kidnapping in 1991 and subsequent 18 years of captivity, he said that Jaycee knows “that terrible and wrong things were done to her and that those people must be held accountable.”

Because of Phillip Garrido’s criminal history, which includes a previous rape and kidnapping charge, he would automatically receive a sentence of 25 years to life if convicted. McGregor acknowledged that Jaycee would have to relive the trauma in court.

However, McGregor added, the trial isn’t what the family is focusing on. Instead, Jaycee and her daughters Starlite and Angel are all receiving tutoring and the entire family is working on building a new life together.

"To watch the interaction between Jaycee and her mother ... after 18 years is remarkable," McGregor said. "The emotions there, I think they're still wrestling with all of that but I think they're making great progress." (CNN)
