Did former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing have a passionate affair with a young Princess Diana? That’s the talk swirling around Paris this week after a draft copy of Giscard’s novel, The Princess and the President, was leaked to the press.
Set in the 1980s, the romance novel recounts an affair between a French president who meets a British princess, and the two characters are believed to be based on Princess Di and himself. In the book, the fictional Princess Patricia, who is described as “very pretty, always in the media, and unhappy at home,” tells the President Lamberty character that “ten days before my marriage, my future husband told me he had a mistress and he was going to carry on seeing her after our marriage.” The two later share a steamy romance together.
It’s known that Giscard, who was president of France from 1974 to 1981, met Princess Di on numerous occasions both before and after her marriage to Prince Charles, but the question remains just how much the novel is based on their lives. (The Sun)
