Eight Things I Learned on the Set of Mercy

Mercy

Give an already candid cast some caffeine and secrets are bound to come out! At least that’s what I found when I spent a day on the set of NBC’s hit medical drama Mercy. Here’s what I learned:

1. James Tupper is even more charming than his dreamy character Dr. Sands.

James Tupper

James T. (there are three James on set!), my official tour guide, was so funny, genuine and chivalrous (even holding doors open). In between fooling me into getting into a fake elevator and trying to coax me up a set of stairs that lead to nowhere (I didn’t fall for that one!), James shared what his partner (and baby mama) Anne Heche was up to while he was at work in New Jersey. In town visiting from Los Angeles, she was at Christie’s auction house in New York City bidding on antiques for their new home in L.A. Each time she bought an item, she’d email him a photo of her purchase. By the end of the hour, she’d racked up a crystal chandelier, two side chairs and a French toile arm chair.

2. New Dr. Briggs, played by James Van Der Beek, has a dark secret.

James Van Der Beek

James Van Der Beek, who debuts on the show tonight and is guaranteed to stick around for 8 to 10 episodes, shares that his Dr. Briggs is a very intriguing character. “He might be a womanizer or have a gambling addiction — we don’t know yet,” he says. “What we do know is that he’s result-oriented, and he’s not at all precious with anyone else’s feelings. He’s got a goal and he’s going to go for it, and do it. He doesn’t really care who he steps on in order to get there.”
