She didn’t go to Disneyland. Carey Mulligan’s idea of celebrating an Oscar nomination for An Education was a bit more low-key. “I was at the house I was staying at in L.A., watching alone, when the nominations were read. When they said my name [for Best Actress], I went into shock,” reveals the British ingénue, who plays a 16-year-old schoolgirl who falls for an older man in her breakout role. “Then I remember seeing my picture come up on the screen and I thought, ‘I hate that picture.’” The 24-year-old laughs and adds, “The Oscar nomination is just beginning to sink in.”

Do you at least allow yourself some very bad carbs when you’re nominated for an Oscar?
The morning the nominations were read, I started nervously eating Fig Newtons. I ate them obsessively and then just rang people up. It’s funny because I did all the reaction interviews for TV, too. They give you champagne at 8 in the morning. I felt so sick. Fig Newtons and champagne are not a good combination. But it’s the Oscar diet!

What is going to be your pre-Oscar beauty regime?
A great makeup artist. If I didn’t have someone doing my makeup I’d look like I rolled out of bed. I have a person doing everything. They put makeup on you and you look five pounds lighter. I did go to a spa after the Oscars were announced and had my first mud bath. It was awful and horrible. I don’t like mud.

How did you get cast in the upcoming Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps?
It was another phone call I’ll never forget. Oliver [Stone] saw a screener of An Education earlier that year. One day I was on another set with Keira Knightley having sushi and my agent called me and said, “I’ll patch you through to Oliver.” I thought, “OK, I won’t finish my edamame.” I was so excited because it was monumental. He said, “I haven’t gotten the script together yet, but will you come out and read it?” It was an amazing experience making the movie. It’s a boy’s movie and I’m the girl.
