“How did I get into the skin of Joan Jett?” poses actress Kristen Stewart. “For starters, I got into the makeup chair in the morning, where I was literally turned into a young Joan. I had the smoked-up eyes that really told the story of how she was deep, serious and into that music. It was a completely different look than being Bella Swan. I really did feel transformed.” Stewart gave good face thanks to celebrity makeup artist Robin Matthews, who not only worked with Kristen in her ‘70s period piece about the hard rocking all-girl band, but also gave Bella her dewy, innocent look in the Twilight series. BettyConfidential sat down with Robin Matthews and got the lowdown on how she created the look for Kristen, and how you can replicate it at home.

“We did so much research for The Runaways because it’s a period piece,” said Robin. “The tiny little details you find from your research help to bring so much depth to a film. We found around 5000 photos of The Runaways and that time period. Then we lined the make-up trailer walls with them. We categorized them in binders. You could barely see any of the mirrors in the trailer because there were so many photos. It was very important for us to replicate The Runaways exactly as they were. I didn’t want the look to be a glossed-over Hollywood inspiration. Every look in the movie is a re-creation of actual photos of the real people. The Runaways were such pioneers with their iconic looks, and it was such an honor to be able to pay homage to them by re-creating these looks, it had to be done with precise detail.”
Smokey eyes were such a signature look back then for rocker chicks. It’s just as popular today, so we asked Robin to help us re-create the look. Robin explained, “It's all about eyeliner pencil. Apply generously and smudge away! There are so many great eyeliner pencils. The two that I used on The Runaways are Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes and MAC Kohl pencil."
