The next time American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara Dio Guardi and Ellen DeGeneres don’t see eye-to-eye, perhaps they should try settling their differences over a cheesecake. That’s because the Hollywood heavyweights are starting to resemble some very familiar Miami residents: The Golden Girls.

Although the four reality-show stars – who travel down the road and back again, not in the name of being a friend but to find the next big music sensation – make their home inside a high-tech California soundstage rather than a peaceful pastel Florida ranch house, their similarities to the senior citizens are rather striking.

Take Simon, for instance. With his booming voice, sophisticated air, and blunt demeanor, one could easily confuse him for Dorothy (Bea Arthur), only his tops are tighter. And as cohorts of the brutal Brit and the brash substitute teacher know full well, you don’t want to mess with either of them — both can take down their victims with just a cutting quip or a sideways sneer. Another bond between Simon and Dorothy: Both got engaged during their final season on their respective series. While Dorothy’s three BFFs cried a river of tears when she left the lanai, there might be a few dry eyes on the Idol panel when Simon makes his exit.

Blonde, wide-eyed and bumbling – each of those adjectives aptly describes former stand-up comic Ellen and former St. Olafian Rose (Betty White). Unlike Simon and Dorothy, this sweet-natured set would never dream of saying anything to hurt anyone’s feelings. It’s positivity that they embrace — literally! Rose liked nothing better than to give her roomies a big ol’ group hug, while Ellen couldn’t stop herself from wrapping her arms around cutie Tim Urban after his stirring rendition of Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” on March 10. And as much as these gals appreciate music, they also love to get down: Ellen struts her stuff on her daily talk show, while Rose once out-shimmied the competition in a dance contest.
