Sure, you slather on sunblock before you step outside, and you might even toss on a hat like Sienna Miller did to protect yourself from damaging rays, but did you know that not all sun protection products are created equal? And hats, while cute, don’t help as much as you’d like them to. Many people think that sunscreens with a sky-high SPF mean you’ll get a huge boost in sun protection and you can lay out for a longer period of time, but that’s not true. According to Neal Schultz, MD, board-certified dermatologist and the author of It’s Not Just About Wrinkles: A Park Avenue Dermatologist’s Program for Beautiful Skin in Just Four Minutes a Day. “Sunscreens with a very high SPF give you very little additional protection,” he says. “It’s better to use a SPF of 30 and reapply it, than a 90 SPF once a day. The real impediment to sunscreen protection is not reapplying it - and not putting on enough.”
Aim to put on about an ounce of broad-spectrum sunscreen – about a shot glass-worth – 20 to 30 minutes before stepping outside if you’re using a chemical sunscreen, like those that contain Parasol 1789, it absorbs ultraviolet light. If you’re using a physical sunblock, like ones that contain zinc oxide - they reflect the sun’s rays like a coat of armor, then you can apply it right before you head out. You don’t need to reapply sunscreen if you’re working in an office all day. Do put on another coating of every three to four hours if you’re outdoors or right after a swim.
