7 Self-Tanners That’ll Keep Your Summer Glow

The leaves may be changing color, but that doesn’t mean you have to look pale and pasty.

One of the things we’ll miss most about the summer is the glow! No, not the luminous sunsets, but the way our skin looked sun-kissed and radiant. Just because it’s colder now, doesn’t mean you have to forgo that “just got back from a weekend at the beach” look. The right sunless tanners not only give you back your summer shine, they also contain moisturizers that will help nourish your skin, which is oh-so important during these brutally cold months. Here’s seven of the best.

Self-tanner 1

1. Derma Quest Skin Therapy DermaGlow Self Tanner ($36, skinrx.com) smells a bit like cocoa butter, so when you’re using it, your summer time memories will come alive. This self-tanner contains aloe vera, which is a natural skin soother and moisturizer. Use it every day, to subtly build your tan.

2. The Body Shop Cocoa Butter Everyday Summer Body Lotion ($18, thebodyshop-usa.com) can be used all year long. This gradual tanner comes in two shades: Fair to Medium, and Medium to Dark. Use this lotion every day, and you’ll develop a deep, dark tan. It has a light chocolate scent, and it also contains moisturizing vitamin E and cocoa butter.

3. Remember the colored foamy soap you used as a kid? Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Moisturizer ($8.49, drugstore.com) is just as fun! This fast-drying tanner slowly gives you a gorgeous tan that’ll last four to five days. How dark do you want to go? Daily usage makes the tan deeper and last longer.

4. Who wouldn’t want the ease of an airbrush tan? Clinique Self Sun Airbrush in a Can ($20, nordstrom.com) sprays on quickly – the nozzle is designed for a continuous stream of tanner. It dries quicker, and in one hour, you’ll have a gorgeous tan! The formula is oil-free and non-acnegenic.

This is great! I'll definitely be trying some of these.

With the cancer & tanning beds I've been a ghost lately so these are awesome!

I use self tanners almost every weekend -- something about being tan makes me feel ready to go out and have a great time. I stopped using tanning beds, and now I rely on Tan Towels or mystic tan spray tans -- I actually get more tan using these than I ever would baking in a bed!

I love self-tanners for many reasons. Instead of days hoping I'll get a nice tan, I get one in minutes! I don't have to travel to get a rich dark tan, and best of all, no worry about future wrinkles!

But how do you reach your middle lower back??? I can't reach that spot and don't want to start self tanning if I can't do it properly! :(

It takes time and practice. First put your hair up, the worst thing you want to do is get that stuff on your hair. Then angle yourself so you can see your back in the mirror. Start with the lower back and slowly work your way up. When you can't go higher, switch to working on your shoulders, then you're going to have to very slowly work it down the middle of the back by angling your hands and arms. It looks like a wacked out yoga position, but it can be done. Just go slowly and use a mirror.

Important tips --
1. if you're a novice, lather up with lotion first -- it blends everything in.
2. Use a hair dryer over your body to dry and set -- this really helps
3. Wash your palms thoroughly after, but use a wet washcloth so you don't have streams of water running down your wrists, messing up the tan there
4. Loreal Sublime is THE BEST tanner (although Banana Boat is great as well)
